    Communion traditions vary

Today is the first Sunday in October, and some Virginia churches will serve Holy Communion to the congregations. Traditions vary regarding how often The Lord's Supper is taken.

In many Virginia Baptist churches, this ordinance takes place every first Sunday of a month. Some houses of worship uphold this tradition during Holy Week just before Easter on Wednesday or Thursday. Some Pentecostal congregations in the Commonwealth serve Communion quarterly.

In the 1984 film "Places in the Heart, starring Sally Field and Danny Glover, communion was given in the church on Easter Sunday, and as each person reached for the grape juice and crackers, they said, "Peace of God."Some people have the Holy Ordinance in their homes based on I Corinthians 11:25.

After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

Catholics celebrate Holy Communion at every Mass. The miracle of transubstantiation, where at the last supper Christ consecrates the bread and instructs us to, "take, eat. This is my body.which has been given up for you " He took wine, blessed it and said," This is my blood which has been shed for you for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me." At this, by the mystery of faith the bread and wine are changed into the body and blood, soul and divinity of our lord, Jesus Christ. The priest administers the host saying, "body of Christ." and the communication responds,"amen."It is the most solumn part of the Mass. we must be in a state of grace, having confessed any mortal sins in order to receive communion.
