Gardening in your front yard in Virginia

Earth Island Journal reveals that in some states across the US, growing vegetables in your front yard is prohibited. In Virginia, however, you may have occasionally seen tomatoes or other plants growing in a front yard.

There is no statewide ban on using your front yard to grow veggies or tomato plants in the Commonwealth. Local zoning ordinances and homeowner associations decide whether or not you can have a garden in front of your house.

In Fairfax County, gardens must be on the side or at the back of a house. Before planting on your property, check your local zoning policies or your homeowner's association to ensure compliance.
