Fallen leaves are best left on the ground

Virginians, if you still need to get the memo or forgot, this is your reminder about handling tree leaves on the ground during the autumn season. For the past few years, the Virginia Department of Forestry has advised those living in the Commonwealth not to remove fallen leaves.

This foliage benefits the ecosystem and provides a place for small animals to hibernate during cold weather. The leaves are also a natural fertilizer, a source of mulch, and a protector of tree roots and plants.

An added benefit is that allowing the leaves to remain saves you the time, effort, and money to rake and bag them or pay someone else to do the job for you.

I just mow them up and spread it over the yard I don't need no pesky critters hibernating under those leaves

any place that has whole leaves leaves dead grass in the spring, same thing if you mulch too many of them.
