    Primark opens first store in Virginia

    FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. ( DC News Now ) — Primark, the international clothing retailer from Ireland, opened its doors to DMV customers on July 16 in the Tysons Corner Center, its first Virginia location.

    The Tysons Corner Center said the store officially opened at 11 a.m., welcoming its first customers with a free tote bag and complimentary treats from Georgetown Cupcakes.

    According to a press release from the company, the store will provide shoppers with more than 35,000 square feet of retail selling space with fashion, homeware and beauty, “all at affordable prices U.S. shoppers cannot get enough of.”

    The store was founded in 1969 in Ireland under the Penneys brand.

    The Tysons Corner Center location marks Primark’s 25th store in the United States and the second in the DMV area, following the recent opening at Arundel Mills in Hanover, Maryland.

    Primark also announced new store locations coming soon to Potomac Mills in Woodbridge, Virginia, and the Mall at Prince George’s in Hyattsville, Maryland.

    This weekend, customers will have more chances for prizes and freebies.

    Giveaway events and prizes available, according to the Tysons Corner Center:

    July 20:

    • Free totes and other giveaways, while supplies last starting at 10 a.m.
    • Free lunch available from the Empanadas de Mendoza food truck in the Primark parking lot from noon to 4 p.m.

    July 21:

    • Free totes and other giveaways, while supplies last starting at 10 a.m.
    • Free ice cream in the Primark parking lot from noon to 4 p.m.
    • Appearances from SpongeBob SquarePants throughout the day

    In the past Primark faced scrutiny over claims of the companies’ exploitation of low-paid workers in U.K. factories. In response, the company launched the “ Primark Cares ” campaign in 2021, pledging to utilize sustainable practices.
