    Virginia’s unemployment rate unchanged at 2.7% in June

    Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 2.7 percent in June, according to data released on this week by Virginia Works, the state’s Department of Workforce Development and Advancement. The rate was 0.1% higher than the rate one year ago.

    The data shows the number of unemployed residents in June decreased by 2,369 to 122,395, while the number of employed residents decreased by 1,786 to about 4.45 million. The total number of people employed in the private sector grew by 11,600 to just more than 3.5 million, with the government sector adding 3,400 jobs to the economy.

    The largest job gain occurred in the professional and business services sector, which added 6,500 jobs to the economy. The second largest job gain occurred in the government sector, adding 3,400 jobs. The third largest job gain occurred in the education and health services sector, adding 2,900 jobs.
