VISALIA, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – The City of Visalia wants to remind people that if they play with illegal fireworks this Fourth of July, they will likely get burned by a hefty fine.

Citations for the use or possession of illegal fireworks in Visalia start at $2,000 and increase to $4,000 per violation, double that of most cities in the San Joaquin Valley.

The increase was implemented in 2021. This comes after an 86-year-old man died alongside his 14 chihuahuas in a 2019 house fire caused by an illegal firework.

Fireworks that fly in the air, dart across the ground, or explode, are illegal for private use in California. This includes mortar-style fireworks, roman candles, bottle rockets, firecrackers and all other fireworks that do not bear the “Safe and Sane” seal.

The City of Visalia asks the community not to risk it and to please report the use of illegal fireworks – this can be done by calling (559) 513-8080. To report the sale of illegal fireworks call (559) 713-4026.

Those currently in possession of illegal fireworks can drop them off at Visalia Fire Stations from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., any day of the week, no questions asked.
