Does Your Cat Think You’re Family? Signs That Prove It

Cats are famously independent, which makes it even more special when they bond with their cat parents. While some people might think cats aren’t as attached as dogs, they just show their affection in more subtle ways. If you’ve ever wondered whether your feline friend thinks of you as family, here are seven signs that could prove you’re part of their inner circle.

    They Knead on You

Ever noticed your cat rhythmically pressing their paws into your lap or blanket? This is called kneading, and it’s something kittens do to their mothers while nursing. When your cat kneads on you, they’re associating you with the comfort and safety of their mother. It’s their way of saying, “You’re my family.”

    They Groom You

Cats spend a lot of time grooming themselves, but if your cat licks you, it’s a sign they see you as part of their “clan.” Grooming is a social behavior among cats and shows trust and affection. When they lick your hand, face, or hair, they’re treating you like one of their own.

    They Rub Against You

Rubbing their head or body against your legs is another way your cat marks you with their scent, which they do with loved ones. In the wild, cats will rub against other cats they trust to share their scent and establish a bond. When they do this to you, they’re saying, “You’re one of us.”

    They Blink Slowly at You

A slow blink from a cat is often called a “kitty kiss.” Cats use this as a way of showing affection and trust. In the wild, closing their eyes around another animal is a sign of feeling safe. If your cat gives you a slow blink, they’re communicating that they feel completely relaxed and comfortable around you.

    They Follow You Around

If your cat follows you from room to room, it’s a clear sign they enjoy being in your company. Even though cats may not be as overt as dogs about their need for companionship, their presence is their way of saying they want to be near their family.

    They Bring You “Gifts”

Though it might not always be pleasant, when a cat brings you a gift like a toy, leaf, or (gasp) a small rodent, they’re sharing a prized possession. In the wild, cats bring their catch to their families. By leaving you a “present,” they’re trying to take care of you, just like they would a family member.

They Sleep on You or Next to You

Cats are vulnerable while they sleep, so they’ll only rest in safe spaces. If your cat chooses to sleep on or beside you, it’s a big sign of trust. They feel secure knowing you’re there to watch over them, just as they would with a family member.

    More Than Just a Pet

If your cat kneads on you, grooms you, or snuggles up at night, these are all signs that they think of you as family. While they might not always be outwardly affectionate, cats show their love in small, meaningful ways. Every head bump, slow blink, or soft purr is their way of letting you know they’re part of your family—and you’re part of theirs.
