In general, Minnesota is consistently rated as one of the safest states in the country. Residents of Minnesota's most dangerous places do not typically feel safe, despite most Americans feeling safe. Perhaps you are wondering where the most dangerous areas are in Minnesota or if you are thinking about moving. According to RoadSnacks, here are the top 10 most dangerous cities in Minnesota:

1. Bemidji

Beautiful, natural surroundings surround the city of Bemidji in northern Minnesota. City life has its downside, as well. In 2018, there were 79 violent crimes in Bemidji, a city of about 15,000 people. In terms of violent crimes per capita, that puts it at #3. According to the state's database, Bemidji ranks #2 out of 82 counties in terms of property crimes.

2. Minneapolis

Despite being Minnesota's most populous city, much of the crime in the state can also be found in Minneapolis. According to FBI statistics, it has 793 violent crimes per 100,000 people, ranking as #1 for violent crime. The united states rank #9 in property crime, with 3,911 crimes per 100,000 citizens.

3. Waite Park

Waite Park, just outside of St. Cloud, has its share of crime, as well. With 386 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, Waite Park ranks #7 in violent crime. However, property crimes rank #1, with a staggering 10,011 crimes per 100,000 people.

4. West St. Paul

A different suburb of the Twin Cities whose crime rate is likely heightened by its location is West St. Paul. Despite a population of just over 20,000, this city ranks #10 for violent crime, with 373 per 100,000 people. It ranks #4 for property crimes, with 4,849 crimes per 100,000 people.

5. Virginia

About 8,500 people live in Virginia, Minnesota, a town on the Iron Range. Crime is rife in this small town. The FBI ranks #6 in this category with a violent crime rate of 414 per 100,000. Crime against property ranks it #14 with 3,464 crimes per 100,000.

6. St. Paul

St. Paul is one of the highest  on the list regarding crime. In terms of violent crime, it ranked #2 behind Minneapolis, with 626 violent crimes per 100,000 people. Considering all property crime statistics, it ranks #19 in that category, with 3,255 crimes reported per 100,000.

7. Maplewood

You shouldn't move to Maplewood if you want your Laptop, your phone, and your TV to yourself. Not only has this 41,341-person Minneapolis suburb been named one of the Twin Cities' worst suburbs by Road Snacks, but it also has a crime rate that will make you gape. A total of 1,627 thefts were reported last year in the city. Approximately 1 in 19 residents in the state are victims of burglary, the second-highest rate in the nation. The state also ranks 24th worst for income and 16th for uninsured people. In the Minneapolis metro area, it has the 17th highest unemployment rate (4.56%).

8. Brainerd

Brainerd is a small Minnesota city surrounded by beautiful natural areas. But even with a population of 13,000, this city ranks on this list. It is surprisingly high in violent crime with 455 crimes per 100,000 people, ranking #4. With 3,380 reported crimes against property per 100,000, property crime ranks much lower at #17.

9. Fergus Falls

Among Minnesota's most dangerous cities, Fergus Falls ranks ninth. This list includes Fergus Falls mainly because of its eighth position ranking for property crime. In Fergus Falls, burglaries are just over one a week on average, but theft is the biggest problem.

10. St. Cloud

In St. Cloud, you'll find lots to do and see, despite its small size. It does have its share of crime because of its larger population. There are approximately 68,000 residents in the city, and it has 384 violent crimes per 100,000 people and 3,771 property crimes.
