We had a discussion with Bryan Hoare, a wellness coach that assists his clients in achieving their goals.

Elite wellness coach and counselor Bryan Hoare reestablishes the connection between the spiritual and the physical with a range of interconnected treatments.

Bryan Hoare has close to thirty years’ worth of experience in the health and wellness sector, and assists people of all ages. With a variety of programs to select from, Bryan prioritizes the person and their unique goals. From therapeutic dialogue to endurance sports coaching, Bryan helps clients achieve their potential, whatever that may be. Treatments vary from support in the recovery from cardiovascular disease, obesity, persistent pain, stress and depression; as well as leading people to achieve peak athletic performance and develop mental focus.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START COACHING AND COUNSELLING? HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?

As a teenager, I began coaching sports, having a love of athletics as opposed to traditional academics. My interest in sport training eventually led me to a Master’s degree in exercise and nutrition science. Later on, I pursued an MBA focused in HR, which gave me valuable knowledge on human and organizational behavior. These academic pursuits have helped me care for my clients.

    DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS.

    Loyal, persistent, authentic.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF WELLNESS?

It is how we choose to live our best lives, and the alterations we make as we evolve through life. It is not a smooth journey, and there are periods of illness, pain and loss – the way forward is to aim to being better in as many areas of your life as possible. Prioritizing wellness is key to a fulfilling and productive life.

WHAT TAKES PLACE IN A TREATMENT SESSION WITH YOU?

I’ve developed a collection of programs that cater to every individual’s unique starting point and desired change. My approach focuses on leveraging the mind-body connection. Together, we identify a client’s needs and determine the activities that will be the most advantageous to them.

The treatments I provide are on a spectrum, moving from the mind (I) to body (VIII)

    (I) Therapeutic Dialogue – conversations, which analyze challenges and opportunities.

(II) Mindfulness Coaching – finding present awareness without judgement, and being ‘in the moment’ in everyday life.

(III) Functional Insight Training – moving with purpose / understanding behavior by means of movement and physical challenges.

(IV) Peak Experiences Sensing – doing something epic (active, fun and even scary), being present and connecting the mind and body.

    (V) Aquatic Mastery – exercise and movement within a body of water – moving with confidence, balance and awareness in this new space.

(VI) Cognitive Functional Therapy – a biopsychosocial approach to help decrease musculoskeletal pain and its impacts on lifestyle quality.

(VII) Personal Training – enhancing mind-body biochemistry, physiology, behavior and cognition through exercise and good nutrition.

(VIII) Endurance Sports Coaching – all the coaching and guidance required to run a 100km race, or simply enjoy a first triathlon.

WHO SHOULD JOIN YOU FOR A SESSION?

Anyone that believes they can benefit from engaging with their inner-self, discovering physical limits, and building new behavioural narratives.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT BEING A COACH AND COUNSELOR?

If I want to help others I need to be in my best form. Practicing what I preach in my mind, body, and spirit, keeps me real. I need to be true to myself, and to grow and learn to be my best for others.

WHERE DO YOU WORK FROM AT THE MOMENT?

I am a global nomad. Recently, I have been in the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Spain, Portugal and Thailand. Some of my clients are online, while others I work with in-person. I currently have a few wellness projects in South East Asia, and some in Europe. I have been in Thailand throughout the last few months.

ARE YOU A VISITING PRACTITIONER AT ANY OF THE RESORTS AND WELLNESS RETREATS?

At the moment I work online and in-person with a variety of individual and corporate clients. I am regularly approached to support VP’s to connect with gatekeepers and decision-makers across a plethora of luxury brands, including Soneva, Four Seasons and Six Senses.

WHAT IS BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN?

    Be kind.

WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU’RE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF?

After enduring many struggles and challenges, I have rebuilt my life. Going through these difficult periods of time, I’ve come to realize the importance of embracing compassion, authenticity, and finding meaning. I am thriving once again and dedicated to living a fulfilling and purposeful life. I’m grateful for my nearly 35-year career in mind-body coaching. Helping others who are facing challenges is deeply fulfilling to me. As a “wounded healer,” myself, I find I am able to provide support and mentorship from a place of empathy and understanding, because I’ve been there.

WHAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?

I don’t stay up late anymore, but usually talking to friends in different time-zones is when I might need to adjust my sleep pattern.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE YOUNG?

I wanted to be ‘The Man from Atlantis’, which is a TV show about the lone survivor from the lost city of Atlantis. He possessed superhuman abilities and could breathe underwater, so I learned to Scuba-dive when I was 13, and excelled as a competitive swimmer. I am still experimenting with a freedom in the water – running weighted-down with rocks on the seabed and ocean swimming. I can’t breathe underwater … yet.

    WHO IS YOUR DREAM CLIENT?

A person who aspires to make the changes they believe are important, and that they share their progress and support others on their journeys.

    FAVORITE ‘ME’ TIME ACTIVITY

Physical activity, movement of some kind. Being in nature. Doing something that pushes me to leave my comfort zone, and even scares me. Discovering new ideas with friends, particularly if the subject is contentious or controversial. Pushing boundaries!

WHAT HAS THE PANDEMIC TAUGHT YOU?

Nobody actually knows what they are doing. But, being authentic and not pretending to have the answer will actually help solve many of the big issues that society is faced with.

WHO DO YOU FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM?

Finca Ambiwasi (fincaambiwasi), the house of ancestral medicine in Colombia, with a community of wonderful people who explore plant medicine. I also follow Dr. Tamsin Lewis (drtam), a world-class triathlete and medical doctor, who provides a balanced approach to integrative health, and brings an evidence-informed wisdom to a wellness audience. There is also Samantha Häberli (the.earthling.cafe), a creative plant-based chef with an amazing cafe in Bangkok serving high-vibrational comfort food.

    WHAT IS NEXT FOR YOU?

I’m designing and leading integrated wellness systems for commercial projects. I’m focused on crafting year-round retreats, which don’t need external specialists, but are concentrated on improving the internal team, rebooting facilities, using equipment in a creative manner, and making special use of the environment. I want to host retreats that run throughout the year and that aren’t limited by date or having experts in-house. I want to create an integrated approach to wellness using the in-house expertise and combining the programming really well with what the market wants.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TO SUCCESS?

Being true to my own principles and visions permits me to find my own meaning, which is success, but by a different name.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR MOTTO?

I love the notion that Siddhartha Gautama (‘the Buddha’) is considered to be the first psychotherapist. A recent supporter of his teachings, an American Tibetan-Buddhist nun, Prema Chodron, has a beautiful phrase, which I use to keep me on track:

“Things falling apart is a kind of testing and also a kind of healing. We think the point is to pass the test or to overcome the problem, but the truth is that things don’t really get solved. They come together and they fall apart. Then they come together again and fall apart again. It’s just like that. The healing comes from letting there be room for all of this to happen: room for grief, for relief, for misery, for joy.” - Prema Chodron
