North Carolina GOP Appoints Jason Simmons as Chairman Amid Trump's Endorsement

North Carolina Republican activists have selected the individual responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the state party to assume the role of chairman. This comes after Michael Whatley's promotion to lead the Republican National Committee earlier this month. The state GOP's Executive Committee, voting on Tuesday night in Johnston County, elected Jason Simmons, the party's Executive Director, as the state chairman. Simmons prevailed over Jim Womack, Chairman of the Lee County party, by a significant margin of more than two to one, according to a party spokesperson.

Simmons received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump for the position, as Trump had also chosen Whatley to succeed Ronna McDaniel as the RNC Chairwoman. Whatley resigned from his position as state chairman on Tuesday.

Simmons has a strong connection to Trump, having served as the state director for Trump's 2016 presidential campaign in North Carolina and overseeing Trump campaign operations in certain Southeast states in 2020. In a news release, Simmons expressed his gratitude for being chosen by his fellow Republicans to lead the party during what he considers to be the most crucial election of their lifetime. He emphasized his commitment to helping Trump secure North Carolina's electoral votes and supporting Lt. Governor Mark Robinson's efforts.

Simmons plans to build on the momentum of the Republican Party in North Carolina and continue to strengthen its presence in the state. With his experience in campaign operations, he aims to mobilize grassroots support and engage with voters across the state. Simmons also expressed his dedication to promoting the conservative values championed by former President Trump and working closely with Lt. Governor Mark Robinson to advance their shared goals.

According to Matt Mercer, the State GOP spokesperson, Jason Simmons has won the election against Womack by a vote of 289-130. This victory will allow Simmons to hold the position of chair until the next scheduled election in June 2025.
