A man was killed during a shooting on Burlington’s Church Street in the early hours of Saturday morning, according to Burlington police.

Responding to a report of gunfire, police arrived and began performing CPR on the victim, identified as Stowe resident Teville Williams, 30, a police press release stated. Another officer apprehended the suspect, 22-year-old Aaliyah Johnson, and seized a .45 caliber pistol.

Police struggled to provide care to the victim, who had been shot multiple times, because of a large group of bystanders, the release stated.

“Officers attempting to provide medical care to the victim were hampered by a large crowd that surrounded the officers. This crowd had to be pushed back in order to preserve the crime scene, which included shell casings, bullets, and blood evidence,” the release said.

Williams was brought to the University of Vermont Medical Center where he was declared dead, police said.

An initial investigation found that Williams and Johnson had a fight during which Williams allegedly assaulted Johnson, police said. The two were inside Red Square, a Church Street bar and nightclub at the time. Red Square employees made them leave the bar using separate exits.

“Ms. Johnson exited one door and moved towards the other to confront Mr. Williams on Church Street,” the release stated. “She then allegedly shot him several times.”

In a statement Saturday morning, Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak offered her condolences and praised the police response.

“Acts of violence like this one ripple throughout our community, impacting our sense of safety. Burlington is grappling with complex challenges stressing our community safety system as a whole. We are actively working to ensure that we have a community safety system that interrupts cycles of violence, reduces harm to our community, and centers victims and survivors,” Mulvaney-Stanak continued.
