WAINWRIGHT ‒ A 41-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot by deputies with the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office on the evening of July Fourth.

According to Sheriff Orvis Campbell , the 911 center received a call at 9:32 p.m. of an intoxicated man shooting a gun in the 1900 block of Wainwright Road in Wainwright . The call came from a neighbor who said he saw the man shooting in the director of the man's own house and that his wife and some children were at the house.

Two deputies found the suspect in his garage with the overhead door open, Campbell said. Deputies saw the gun in the suspect's hand and ordered him to drop the gun. The man did not drop the gun, but instead pointed it at the two deputies. Deputies fired at him, striking the suspect in the arm and leg.

The deputies secured the gun and began giving the suspect first aid, which included putting on a tourniquet and bandaging the wounds until the Warwick Township Fire Department and Smith Ambulance arrived on the scene. The suspect was then taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton. Campbell said his injuries were reported to be non-life threatening.

Neither of the deputies nor the suspect's family were injured.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation was called in to conduct an investigation into the actions of the two deputies, as is standard procedure, the sheriff said.
