On May 28, the Wake Forest FUNGO took on the Carolina Ducks, besting them 6-2.

While Flaherty Park is under construction still, the game took place 10 minutes down the road at Heritage High School.

FUNGO came into the matchup 0-2, falling in the first two games of the season, both of which came on the road. But FUNGO now grabs their first win in their first game in Wake Forest and their first win under new head coach Trevor Schock.

    A hot start

Wake Forest wasted no time getting on the board, putting up three runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 3-0 lead. This came after a hot defensive start, putting up a 1-2-3 opening frame.

FUNGO had four singles in the first inning, with Nick DiCarlo kicking things off. Ty Torti singled on a hard ground ball to center for an RBI, sending DiCarlo home from second.

Neo Drew hit a grounder to the shortstop who earned an error on a bad throw to first. This allowed Drew to reach base and Torti to make a dash to home for the score.

The scoring in the frame capped off with a grounder to left by Aaron Bock to send Drew home from third. Wake Forest left bases loaded by the end of the inning, having a chance to extend their lead by a solid margin.

    Extending their lead

Wake Forest allowed a hit in the top of the second, however, catcher Landon Flemming threw the runner out on a steal attempt.

The next two frames so no hits, but it was not long before the FUNGO were able to extend their lead. In the bottom of the third, they added two more runs. Both runs came from a two-RBI Jonalan Richardson line drive single to left field sending home Grant Ross and Drew.

    Scoring kicks back up

The fourth and fifth innings were highly defensive, with all four seeing only three at-bats each. In the top of the sixth, the Ducks managed a single, however, this was all they could put up.

The bottom of the sixth saw FUNGO get back on the scoreboard with another RBI single, this again coming off the bat to send home Bock.

The Ducks finally saw their first and only runs in the top of the seventh. In the first three at-bats of the frame, they saw one out and two walks to get men on first and second. A single by No. 28 resulted in an RBI and brought the runner from first into scoring position.

No. 3 for the Ducks hit a sacrifice fly on the following at-bat, narrowing the deficit to four. This was the last scoring of the game, giving FUNGO their first win of the season.

    Key players

Wake Forest named Nick Widener their player of the game in the win. Widener pitched five scoreless innings, striking out four batters and allowing only a single hit.

“It’s pretty good, glad we won though. That’s all that matters,” said Widener when asked how he feels about being player of the game. “[My performance] was alright. There were a couple of hit-by-pitches I could have fixed, that’s about it though. Felt pretty good.”

Bock led the team at the plate with two hits resulting in two RBIs, both stats tying team highs. Drew also had two hits, and while neither led to RBIs, both successfully led to a team-high two runs.

    Up next

FUNGO will remain in Wake Forest as they take on the Danville Dairy Daddies on May 30 at 6:30 p.m. This comes as a rematch of both team’s season opener, as the Dairy Daddies took down Wake Forest 3-0.
