Wake Forest FUNGO takes rivalry win over Clovers to take No. 2 spot in the division

On June 6, the Wake Forest FUNGO went head-to-head with the Clayton Clovers.

The Clovers, who were 1-0 in division play, were one of two teams above the 1-1 FUNGO.

Wake Forest picked up the 8-3 win to rise to No. 2 in the Central Division.

How it happened

The game started slow, seeing zero runs in the first two innings, but from there, Wake Forest caught heat.

In the top of the third, FUNGO scored five runs. The scoring in the frame was capped off by a grand slam by Freddie Oliver.

Wake Forest added two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-0 lead, but the Clovers responded with two runs to narrow the deficit back to five.

Both teams scored a run in the ninth, but the Clovers could not surmount the six-run deficit, giving FUNGO the win.

Key players

FUNGO selected Oliver as the Player of the Game, with his grand slam in the third proving instrumental in the victory for Wake Forest. Oliver finished with two hits, a stolen base and five RBIs.

Pitcher Nick Widener, the Player of the Game in Wake Forest’s first division win of the season, allowed no runs and only two hits in four innings pitched, helping lead the team to victory.

Three other FUNGOs had two hit performances, coming as Aaron Bock, Neo Drew and DiCarlo, all of which had one run except for Drew with three.

Wake Forest returns home to face division rival Reidsville Luckies on June 7 at 6:30 p.m. The Luckies are No. 1 in the division with a 1-0 divisional record.
