Hundreds flocked to Heritage High School on Wednesday night to enjoy live music, local food, and a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day.

Viewing for this year’s Fourth of July festivities took place on the football field at Heritage. Kids played games, adults put down blankets and folding chairs, and those in attendance were treated to a fireworks display that lasted more than a half hour and ended with a grand finale.

The event wrapped up a little after 10 p.m., but festivities started up again on Thursday morning, July 4.

The Children’s Parade kicked off at 10:30 a.m. outside of the Wake Forest Historical Museum on Main Street. It featured hundreds of children from around the area dressed in patriotic outfits and walking, biking, or being pulled in wagons along the parade route, before ultimately ending near the Wake Forest Community House on Owen Avenue.

Many of the children who participated in the parade stayed at the Wake Forest Community House for Art in the Park, a kids’ art class and community celebration where children created personal art projects and learned a variety of painting and sculpting techniques.

Firefighters from the Wake Forest Fire Department were on hand to teach about fire safety and firework safety, as well.

Town officials estimated that about 2,000 children were on hand to celebrate.
