The Northern Wake Senior Center reopened Thursday morning.

The center was closed through Wednesday out of safety concerns for guests, staff and volunteers as the facility dealt with the surge of COVID-19 cases.

The center, which is located at 235 E. Holding Ave, experienced an uptick in COVID-19 cases at the end of last week and throughout the weekend. The symptoms exhibited by those afflicted were worrisome enough that the center’s leadership decided closure was the best path forward.

The senior center’s program director, Jennie Griggs, said that the decision was made to ensure those who frequent the center and take part in its programs are protected from the virus.

“Their safety is our top priority, and we decided to close to make sure they were safe.”

Griggs said that the center serves an older population that might be more vulnerable to specifics strains of the virus, and that some of the regular guests have medical conditions that leave them especially at-risk.

“We want to make sure they are no longer symptomatic and contagious before we feel comfortable reopening.”

All programs, activities and classes scheduled through Wednesday were cancelled.
