Continuing the First Alert Day into the Second Day of the Sturgis Rally: Dangerous Heat Likely
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Opening weekend has officially started for the 84th annual Sturgis Rally! But it was definitely a hot start today. We are looking to continue that trend. Another First Alert Weather Day is in effect for all of KOTA Territory, including the city of Sturgis. Dangerous heat is expected again. Temperatures nearing 100 by tomorrow afternoon in Sturgis so if you are headed out to participate in some festivities, make sure to stay hydrated all day long and avoid direct sunlight throughout the majority of the day. Wear plenty of sunscreen and look out for your fellow bikers that may have forgotten. The Black Hills will also be seeing the heat. 90s are expected in the highest of the elevations of the hills with dry road conditions. Same rules apply to staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen. This weekend is going to be an all around hot one in the City of Sturgis with temperatures in the triple digits on Saturday and 90s on Sunday. Some PM storms may fire up across the area late on Sunday. But rain chances really start to ramp up as we head closer to the end of the Rally next weekend. Our best shot at rain is looking to be on Thursday.
Care Campus makes changes in how they help Pennington County community
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - The Care Campus is re-organizing to better tackle the issues facing the community. The Campus, led by the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, is adding more detox beds and reducing the number of safe beds. The detox beds are used for people who are intoxicated to sober up while avoiding using the jails, while the safe beds are places for people to get out of the elements and rest.

PETA’s ‘Hell on Wheels’ chicken truck to be parked in downtown Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - PETA is parking their life-sized, hyper-realistic chicken transport truck outside the Phillips Avenue Diner on Friday. The “Hell on Wheels” truck is covered with images of chickens in crates on their way to slaughter and broadcasts recorded sounds of the birds’ cries and “a subliminal message every 10 seconds suggesting that people go vegan.”
Missouri River water now flowing into town of Madison
MADSION S.D. (KELO) — The wait for additional water is over for the city of Madison. On Friday, the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System announced they finished the one million gallon ground storage reservoir and water has started flowing to Madison. Madison first signed an agreement to purchase water from the Missouri River in 1990.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It’s the first full day of the Sioux Empire Fair at the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds in Sioux Falls. Activities include an open-class swine show at 10 a.m., carnival rides starting at noon, an open-class sheep show at 3 p.m., an open-class goat show at 5 p.m. The grandstand entertainment features The Fury with special guest Kory & the Fireflies at 7:30 p.m. Fair admission is $10, $5 for children and free for ages 5 and under. The grandstand show is free with a paid admission. The fair runs daily through August 10th.
