Homeless Tragedy: Vancouver Homeless Deaths Persist Despite City's Emergency Declaration

    2024-03-09

Vancouver, Washington is facing a significant challenge with homeless deaths, as the city has witnessed the death of eight homeless individuals since December.

This number is alarming as the city is on track to surpass the 45 deaths recorded within its homeless population in 2023. In response to this crisis, the city has taken several steps to address the issue.

    Efforts to Curb Homeless Deaths

In an attempt to reduce homeless deaths, the city of Vancouver has increased staff levels for the Vancouver Homelessness Assistance and Resources Team.

Additionally, city officials are actively searching for a location to establish a bridge shelter that would accommodate up to 150 homeless individuals.

This shelter would provide temporary housing and essential services to bridge the gap between living on the streets and transitioning to permanent housing.

    Emergency Declaration and Ongoing Measures

The Vancouver City Council approved an emergency declaration in November to address the homelessness crisis, allowing City Manager Eric Holmes to issue executive orders on homelessness.

Despite efforts to enhance affordable housing options, the city has struggled to bring down homelessness rates, leading to this emergency declaration.

The ongoing increase in chronic homelessness and unsheltered homelessness in the city has raised concerns about the effectiveness of current initiatives.

    Homelessness Statistics and Impact

According to data from the Point-In-Time count conducted in January 2023, Clark County had 1,300 homeless individuals, with 672 of them living unsheltered.

These results highlight the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to tackle homelessness in the region.

The high death toll among homeless individuals in Vancouver underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for immediate action.

my son was homeless. He was using Fentanyl, he is now clean and sober and on mh medications. he received a grant that helped him pay rent. the grant has paid for his shelter but ran out this month. He has applied for housing and is working on getting disability. He gets 450. a month for now plus food assistance. He is worried again about becoming homeless again. I live in apartments with children and he comes to visit a few days a week. There needs to be more long term affordable housing. It takes longer than a year for someone with physical disabilities and mental health to get on their feet.

We keep throwing $$ at the homeless problem & it NEVER gets better, just worse. Why do we keep repeating something that doesn't work? That's insanity. Many of them refuse to change their lifestyle. Buy them a bus ticket to a distant state w/ some necessities (including $$) & call it good. A new city, new environment, new hope for a new start may be just the thing they need to change things up.
