Federal Appeals Court Upholds Washington's Redrawn Legislative Districts Map

    2024-03-28

In a recent decision by a federal appeals court, new legislative district boundaries for Washington State have been approved to amplify the voices of Latino voters in the Yakima Valley.

Although the boundaries will be in place for this year's elections, opponents can continue to challenge the legality of these borders.

    Legal Challenge and Approval

A panel of federal judges declined to block the new district boundaries, allowing them to take effect.

However, challenges to the legality of the borders can still proceed before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, potentially leading to adjustments or removal of the new boundaries.

The lawsuit, brought by Latino voters, argued that the previous district borders violated federal law by limiting Latino participation in elections.

    Impact on State Lawmakers

The renumbered districts will affect several state lawmakers, with five from the Yakima Valley region finding themselves in new districts.

Notably, Sen. Nikki Torres will be moving to a different district, despite being elected in the 15th district in the previous election.

Senator Brad Hawkins and Senator Curtis King will also face changes in their respective districts.

Federal Appeals and Supreme Court Involvement

Opponents of the new boundaries have turned to the U.S. Supreme Court for an emergency stay to prevent their use. The legal battle underscores the importance of fair representation and access to the political process for all eligible voters.
