Governor Jay Inslee Signs New Budget - Increases Washington State Spending by $2 Billion!

    2024-03-30

Governor Jay Inslee recently signed the final operating budget during his tenure, allocating an additional $2 billion for education, mental health services, housing, and more.

This budget reflects the progressive priorities Inslee has championed over his three terms in office, such as the capital gains tax and the Climate Commitment Act. The governor highlighted the achievements made in various sectors and encouraged continued progress with the new budget.

    Significant Allocation Areas

    Education

The budget prioritizes education with $333 million designated for public K-12 schools. There are specific funds for school staff salaries, special education programs, and maintenance and supplies. Additionally, approximately $306 million will be used for school repairs, renovations, and construction.

    Mental Health

A substantial portion of the new funding focuses on mental health services, with almost $339 million allocated for behavioral health programs, staff, and facilities. This includes investments in existing and new health facilities.

    Housing and Homelessness

The budget includes funding for affordable housing projects, with $127 million set aside in the capital budget. In the operating budget, nearly $82 million is allocated for housing and homelessness programs, primarily for local government grants.

    Opioids and Public Safety

In response to the opioid crisis, the budget includes approximately $51 million for substance disorder treatment and prevention programs. This funding will support addiction treatment in correctional facilities and schools, as well as distributing naloxone to prevent overdoses.

    Carbon Cash

A significant amount of money from the state's carbon pricing program will be used for various initiatives, including $1.2 billion for reducing pollution and investing in sustainable practices.
