Exclusive Access: Costco Cracks Down on Non-Member Food Court Access

    2024-04-02

Costco, the popular retail giant, is making changes to its food court access policy, ensuring that only paying members can enjoy the $1.50 hot dog and soda combo deal.

While food court access has always technically required a membership, the enforcement of this policy has varied across different store locations. Recently, a sign at a Costco store in Orlando, Florida, caught the attention of many as it announced that starting April 8, 2024, only active Costco membership cardholders would be able to purchase items from the food court.

    Increased Scrutiny and Enforcement

In the past, Costco has been known for being lenient with non-member visitors, allowing them to shop with a Costco card verified by a cashier at checkout.

However, recent changes have seen Costco cracking down on non-members accessing the food court or making purchases through self-checkout without proper membership verification.

By stationing workers at self-checkout and scanning membership cards at store entrances, Costco is ramping up its scrutiny to ensure that only paying members receive the benefits and pricing that come with membership.

    Importance of Membership Fees

Membership fees are a significant source of revenue for Costco, with the company making billions of dollars in membership fees each year.

The retailer currently offers annual memberships for $60 and a higher-tier plan called the Executive Membership for $120.

While Costco membership cards are non-transferable, members are allowed to give a second household card to another person in their home.

    What Are Your Thoughts?

    • Do you think Costco's decision to restrict food court access to members only is fair?
    • How do you feel about the increased scrutiny and enforcement of membership policies at Costco?
    • Will these changes impact your decision to shop at Costco in the future?
