The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) has reported that grizzly bears have not been spotted in the North Cascades since 1996, leading to their classification as an endangered species.

Recently, the U.S. National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Department of the Interior, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposed a plan to reintroduce grizzly bears to the area.

    Reintroduction Plan for Grizzly Bears

The plan outlines releasing three to seven grizzly bears into the North Cascades annually for five to ten years, aiming to establish a population of around 25 bears before transitioning to adaptive management.

WDFW emphasizes that grizzly bears are crucial for the ecosystem's biodiversity, promoting ecological resilience, and enhancing the enjoyment of current and future generations.

Mixed Reactions to the Reintroduction Plan

Washington Governor Jay Inslee supports the plan for restoring grizzly bears in the North Cascades.

However, some lawmakers have expressed concerns. Rep. Dan Newhouse believes that the presence of bears could pose threats to farmland, livestock, and human lives, highlighting the resistance from the local community during public comment sessions.

    Controversies Surrounding the Reintroduction Decision

Despite the potential benefits of reintroducing grizzly bears, the decision faces opposition from lawmakers like Rep. Newhouse, who question the lack of community input and prioritize the concerns of residents directly impacted by the plan. A final decision on the reintroduction of grizzly bears is expected by the end of the following month.
