Bold Move: New Washington Law Allows Illegal Immigrants to Obtain Professional Licenses

    2024-04-02

Recently, Governor Jay Inslee signed a new law allowing illegal foreign nationals to obtain professional and commercial licenses for various jobs if they meet certain qualifications.

These individuals will now be able to work as nurses, teachers, architects, pharmacists, dentists, dental hygienists, and home care providers by obtaining these certificates through HB 1889 sponsored by Rep. Amy Walen.

    Passage of the Bill

Instead of needing a Social Security number, they can now provide an individual taxpayer identification number to obtain these licenses. This law does not apply to licenses connected to interstate compacts.

When signing the bill, Governor Inslee emphasized the importance of applicants meeting professional standards and passing necessary exams to open doors for various careers in Washington.

The bill had no opposition during public hearings and passed with overwhelming support in both chambers.

    Impact on Immigration Status

During the House floor discussions, Rep. Walen stated that this policy aims to remove immigration status as a requirement for participating in the economy, allowing individuals to contribute regardless of their citizenship status.

On the other hand, Rep. Eric Robertson expressed concerns about the bill potentially giving false hopes to individuals who might pursue education in certain fields only to face difficulties in securing legal employment due to their immigration status.

The bill, which will take effect on July 1, is seen as a step towards integrating a more diverse workforce in Washington state.

    Support and Opposition

The bill's support highlights efforts to remove barriers for individuals wanting to work in various professions, while opposition voices caution against the impact on lawful work and immigration status. The bill's passage reflects the state's commitment to inclusivity and access to diverse workforce opportunities.
