The trafficking of fentanyl and firearms is a serious crime that has detrimental effects on communities and individuals.

The recent sentencing of Francisco Moncada highlights the efforts of law enforcement to combat such illicit activities and bring perpetrators to justice.

Washington Fentanyl Trafficker Sentenced to Prison

Francisco Moncada, a fentanyl and firearms trafficker with residences in Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington, has received a significant federal prison sentence along with supervised release.

The U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon reported that this week, Moncada was sentenced to 108 months in federal prison and five years of supervised release for his involvement in drug trafficking activities.

Special agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Portland District Office began investigating a drug trafficking organization that operated in Oregon and Washington in October 2021.

After six months of investigation, it was revealed that Moncada had been in communication with multiple local drug traffickers regarding the sourcing of fentanyl.

    Drug Trafficking Investigation

On April 18, 2022, law enforcement stopped a vehicle used by Moncada and his associates that contained 15 pounds of fentanyl. Just two weeks later, another 10 pounds of fentanyl were seized from Moncada during a separate incident. Additionally, investigators found that Moncada had instructed other organization members to sell various firearms.

    Legal Proceedings & Conviction

Following these seizures, investigators searched Moncada's residences in May 2022 and discovered seven firearms and two pounds of fentanyl. From October 2021 to August 2022, a significant amount of illegal substances, including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, were seized from Moncada and his associates. As a result, 16 arrests were made in connection to the organization's drug trafficking activities.

    Legal Charges and Sentencing

In May 2022, Moncada and three others were charged for conspiring to possess and distribute fentanyl. A month later, a federal grand jury indicted Moncada and eight others on charges related to fentanyl distribution.

Moncada was also charged with possession of a firearm in connection with drug trafficking. In December 2023, Moncada pleaded guilty and became the seventh member of the organization to receive a federal prison sentence.

As of now, four other individuals are awaiting sentencing, while one remains a fugitive.

    Conclusion

The sentencing of Moncada serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the United States. It underscores the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies to dismantle criminal organizations and prevent the distribution of harmful substances in our society.
