Unity Prevails: 96% of Washington Bills Find Bipartisan Approval in 2024 Session

    2024-04-03

During Washington state's 60-day legislative session, lawmakers from both major parties worked together to pass bills according to analysis conducted by nonpartisan legislative staff.

This collaboration is evident in the fact that 96% of the 381 bills sent to Governor Jay Inslee for approval received at least one "yes" vote from both Republicans and Democrats. This data showcases the ability of legislators to work together despite ideological differences.

    The Numbers Behind Bipartisan Cooperation

The analysis revealed that a significant percentage of bills received bipartisan support from Republican lawmakers. Specifically, 91.34% of bills garnered six or more Republican votes, 89.24% received 10 or more Republican votes, and 80.84% earned 31 or more Republican votes. While there are still crucial issues where party differences are stark, the majority of bills demonstrated a willingness to collaborate across party lines.

    Challenges and Opportunities for Collaboration

Lawmakers emphasized the importance of bipartisan efforts. Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig highlighted that while disagreements are inevitable, the Washington state legislature has shown its ability to find common ground and work together to serve the interests of the public. However, there are instances where controversial bills, such as Engrossed Substitute House Bill 1589, reveal deeper ideological divides.
