Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell recently introduced an updated transportation levy proposal that would require residents to pay $41 per month.

The levy, totaling $1.45 billion over eight years, aims to enhance transportation safety and maintenance in Seattle. This proposal was crafted based on community feedback, prioritizing a transportation system that is safe, connected, and well-maintained.

    Allocation of Funds

The budget breakdown of the $1.45 billion levy includes significant allocations:

    • $423 million for repaving main roads used by buses, trucks, and cars, as well as improving infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users.
    • $221 million to maintain city bridges and prepare for future projects.
    • $150 million for safety enhancements to reduce traffic incidents.
    • $140 million for facilitating safe access to transit hubs and improving bus route efficiency.
    • $114 million for expanding protected bike lanes and connecting schools to bike paths.
    • $100 million for upgrading traffic signals and activating public spaces within business districts.
    • $59 million for sustainable transportation options to reduce air pollution.

    Implementation and Future Plans

Seattle City Council will review and update the mayoral proposal through the Select Committee on the 2024 Transportation Levy, aiming to present a final levy package to voters in the upcoming fall ballot. This levy is crucial as it accounts for around 30% of Seattle Department of Transportation's budget.
