Community releases balloons in support of Destinee Sides
People in five different locations from Jasper to Birmingham released red balloons Friday night. The community is rallying around Destinee Sides, an 11-year-old Walker County girl who suffered critical injuries after a UTV accident on June 28. More than 311 balloons were released at each location in honor of the 311 patients at Children’s of Alabama Hospital, including Destinee.

Barbara Ann Isbell, 65, of Walker County, Alabama, passed away on July 4, 2024.A memorial service in honor of Barbara will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 4:00 PM at Bell Funeral Home in Sumiton, AL, visitation will be one hour prior to service. Pastor James Long leading the service.

Large gas, retail development planned for I-22 corridor
A new development will be coming to the Interstate 22 corridor and is forecast to bring 50 jobs to Walker County.<\p> A Love’s Travel Stop and County store will own a 22-acre plot within the Heritage Landing Development in Dora. The remainder of the 50-acre Heritage Landing commercial site at the intersection of I-22 and Flat Creek Road is owned by the Drummond Company.<\p>

The NWS has issued a Heat Advisory. For counties in the west, the advisory is in effect until 9 PM CDT this evening. The advisory will be in effect for the entire area from 10 AM to 7 PM CDT Sunday. Heat index values are expected to reach up to 105 today and up to 108 tomorrow. The affected counties include Fayette, Greene, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, and Winston today and all of central Alabama tomorrow.
