WALL TOWNSHIP — Committee members alongside Township Administrator Jeff Bertrand introduced an ordinance last Wednesday night that proposes a referendum allocating taxpayer money to an open space fund.

Ordinance 10-2024 seeks to add a referendum question and interpretive statement to the Official Ballot for the next General Election to be held on Nov. 5, 2024, seeking to preserve and protect open space for recreational and conservational purposes.

The Wall Township Open Space Fund would establish a municipal property tax of $0.015 for every $100 of assessed real property value; for example, the owner of a property valued at $100,000 would pay $15 per year towards the open space fund, Ordinance 10 – 2024 says.

The proposal would be submitted to the county clerk’s office, the ordinance reads. If approved, township residents will have the final say on the open space fund’s implementation, during the  November General Election.

The ordinance says the main purpose of the fund would be to “acquire, develop and maintain open space and lands for recreation and conservation purposes.” It also says that the fund would aim to “protect water quality in the rivers, streams and other waterways” in Wall Township. There are 15 different waterways as part of three watersheds, according to the township’s website.
