WALL TOWNSHIP — The same day of its monthly flea market that attracted hundreds of patrons, the Historic Village at Allaire announced it would be closing temporarily for about a month due to funding issues.
“We are trying to be proactive instead of reactive,” Historic Village at Allaire Executive Director Hance Sitkus told The Coast Star. “This temporary closure will enable us to stabilize our finances so we may have a successful fall and holiday season.”
Starting this past Monday, village offices will be closed until Wednesday, Aug. 7 after citing “the economy, rising inflation costs, unprecedented weather and limited grant funding” as factors leading to the closure in a statement posted to its social media accounts. This includes the site’s historic buildings, visitor center, educational and special needs programs and all other events scheduled during that time frame. This does not include the campgrounds and other properties of Allaire State Park.
“The closure was a combination of factors that hit simultaneously. During the last half of 2023 we lost more than $130,000,” Sitkus told The Coast Star. “Combine that with rising inflation costs of everyday maintenance, repairs, staffing costs and limited grant funding, it has all added up.”
Sitkus said that poor weather played a big role in the closure of the village. The village was forced to postpone weekend events late last year into early 2024 due to rainy and snowy conditions.
