Governor Abbott Announces Sentinel School Safety System
July 26, 2024 – Governor Greg Abbott announced the launch of Sentinel, an innovative and comprehensive system designed to enhance the safety and security of students, faculty, and staff in school buildings across Texas. Sentinel is provided by the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) Office of School Safety and Security and is available to all schools in the state at no charge to the schools. Sentinel will enable robust monitoring of school systems’ implementation and operation of safety and security policies and improves the threat assessment process.

Incarcerated Texans describe conditions in prison following Hurricane Beryl. James Guevara has ridden out three hurricanes sheltered in-place in Texas prisons. Hurricane Beryl, which blew into Texas on July 8, knocked out power at the prison where he lives, among several other Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) facilities. The lights went off at Ramsey, a maximum-security prison in Brazoria County where Guevara lives, around 3 a.m. about an hour before the storm hit in earnest.
East Texas and Louisiana Brace for Flood Watch Until 6 PM Friday
Shreveport, LA – A flood watch is in effect until 6 PM Friday for parts of northwest Louisiana and eastern Texas due to ongoing heavy rainfall. Areas affected include Angelina, Cherokee, Nacogdoches, Sabine, San Augustine, Shelby counties in Texas, and portions of northwest Louisiana including Sabine and Natchitoches parishes.
