WALLA WALLA, Wash. –  On Friday, May 24th Walla Walla officially opened the "Heritage Square" renovation project that's been underway for months downtown!

This grand opening comes after 6 years of planning that started all the way back in 2018.

The construction was finally completed on Thursday, May 23rd and the fences were taken down and welcomed in community members, as an elementary school already performed at the stage that's part of the Heritage Square. The parks and recreation director who's been part of the project since the beginning gave tours of the whole facility. He said today was a celebration of a lot of people's hard work

“It's very exciting back when we came up with the design, we didn't have the money to build it and we didn't know where we're gonna get it, but it's coming together,” Andy Coleman the parks and recreation director, said,  “it's very, very exciting gratifying to show the community what we've come up with, collectively, that I think is going to be a vast improvement to downtown and hopefully an economic driver as well.”

The celebrations aren't quite over today though on July 13th they will have a ribbon cutting ceremony which is also the kick off of their summer concert series.
