During the summer, golf becomes increasingly popular. Google search trends in Washington show that golf-related searches peak in early summer and stay popular in the following months.

In eastern Washington, golf courses are pretty easy to come by. Golfers can select the perfect course for their game, whether they prioritize the variety of holes, the scenery, the social aspect, the difficulty levels or some combination of the above.

A recent study by the golf apparel brand Galvin Green analyzed TripAdvisor feedback on more than 800 courses across the country to find the toughest courses. One is right here in Washington.

Toughest golf course in Washington state

The third-most difficult golf course in the country is in Walla Walla , according to the study. Here are the top 10:

    1. TPC Tampa Bay - Tampa, Florida
    2. Bethpage Black - Farmingdale, New York
    3. Wine Valley Golf Course - Walla Walla, Washington
    4. Stone Ridge Golf Course - Prescott Valley, Arizona
    5. Cinnabar Hills Golf Club - San Jose, California
    6. Wentworth Golf Club - Tarpon Springs, Florida
    7. Shell Landing Golf Club - Gautier, Mississippi
    8. Tot Hill Farm Golf Club - Asheboro, North Carolina
    9. PGA West Pete Dye Stadium Golf Course - La Quinta, California
    10. The Champions Club at Summerfield - Stuart, Florida

Each of the courses are routinely rated with terms like “challenging” and “difficult,” plus game-specific terms like “water hazards” and “narrow approach.” In total, 25 key words were analyzed in reviews.

The reviews for the Wine Valley Golf Course reference its “tough conditions and breathtaking views,” according to the study.

“Its wide fairways can be deceiving as the course demands precision with its strategic bunkering and undulating greens, with the most used term in the reviews being ‘challenging,’” the study release states regarding the Walla Walla course.
