Beatrice Humane Society gives free vaccinations and microchips
BEATRICE, Neb. (KOLN) - Beatrice Humane Society is partnering with Petco Love to provide 200 free vaccinations and microchips for cats and dogs. Wednesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m., owners and their furry friends can go to the Gage County Fairgrounds to utilize the free resource. Vaccinations include parvovirus and distemper for dogs, panleukopenia for cats and rabies for both.

McVeigh signs contract with Houston Rockets
A former Nebraska basketball player has signed a contract to play in the NBA. Forward Jack McVeigh has agreed to a two-way deal with the Houston Rockets. The Australian played three seasons for the Cornhuskers (2015-2018). He would appear in 78 games at Nebraska, averaging 5.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per game. McVeigh would depart Nebraska after his junior season due to reduced playing time and sign with the Adelaide 36ers of Australia’s National Basketball League. He would spend the 2024 season with the Tasmania JackJumpers. McVeigh averaged 16.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. He was named to the All-NBL Second Team and was also the MVP of the championship series. McVeigh recently earned a spot on a basketball team for the 2024 Paris Olympics representing his home country of Australia. Omaha man facing animal cruelty charges after incident in Bellevue
BELLEVUE, Neb. (WOWT) - An Omaha man will appear in court facing a charge of cruelly neglecting an animal resulting in death Thursday. Eduardo Acevedo-Jara, 20, will be facing these charges after being arrested Tuesday after an officer found a puppy lying dead in its dog bed on the front porch of their house at 40th and Gertrude Terrace.
New Kimball restaurant had successful first week open
KIMBALL -- A Colorado family has brought a new restaurant to Kimball – Heritage Cafe. The Cafe took the place of Karen’s Kitchen located at 214 S. Walnut St. The grand opening was July 11, and Owner Debra O'Conner says they had a much bigger turnout from the community than they expected.
Nebraska offers 2027 tight end from California powerhouse
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are the latest program to offer 2027 tight end Mark Bowman. On Tuesday, the Huskers extended an offer to the 6-foot-5 Bowman, who attends California powerhouse Mater Dei in Santa Ana, California. Despite being only a 2027 prospect, Bowman has put together a tremendous offer sheet, including Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Miami (FL), Ole Miss, Ohio State, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, USC, Utah, and Washington. Bowman appeared in eight varsity games as a freshman. In those eight appearances, he made 11 catches for 125 yards and four touchdowns. The Cornhuskers currently do not hold any commitments in their 2027 recruiting class. Matt Rhule and the company are currently focused on their 2025 recruiting class, which holds 16 commitments, including picking up a commitment from Texas defensive back Bryson Webber over the weekend. In the player spotlight with officially a month and a half to go before August 31 is Nebraska freshman running back Izaac Dickey. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Dickey walked-on to the Huskers this offseason after officially committing to the program last June. Dickey is a native of Stromsburg, Nebraska and had a terrific career at Cross County High School where he was a three-year starter at fullback for the Cougars. During his high school career, Dickey totaled nearly 1,800 rushing yards and 40 touchdowns. He was also a standout on defense with over 200 career tackles. Woman cited in deadly crash west of Lincoln
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A woman was cited Tuesday in a deadly crash west of Lincoln earlier this year, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says. Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the 84-year-old woman was charged on suspicion of misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide in the crash on May 29.
