Marrakech, Morocco- the most incredible things to do and see
2021-03-03
Marrakech- a colorful and bustling city in Western Morocco where the Arabic architecture mixes with vibrant markets and the smell of spices. I would lie if I said Marakech is not one of a kind. It is actually overwhelming how much this location has to offer to every traveller. Witness the beauty of local architecture, wander the charming streets of Medina and spend a night in a traditional riad.
Let’s dive into the list of my absolute favourite things to do and see while in Marrakech!
1. GET WANDER-FULLY LOST IN MEDINA
Medina is the old historic part and a bustling centre of Marrakech. It’s surrounded by high orange-washed stone walls and nestles all the markets, shops, mosques and hammams. Medina is a maze of charming streets that you should let yourself get lost in. Spend a day enjoying the souks, street food and local shops to experience the very special spirit of Marrakech. While staying near Medina, you will wake up to the sound of prayers coming from nearby Mosques.
Travel tip: If you get lost while wandering Medina, look out for the signs directing you to the main square which is called Djemma El-Fna. From here navigating will be much easier!
Photography tip: Although local people in Marrakech are extremely friendly, they may not appreciate it when you’re trying to take a picture of them in their daily routines. If you love documenting your travels, instead of sneaking up for a snap, ask beforehand if it’s okay to take some photos.
2. VISIT BEN YOUSSEF MADRASA
Formerly the best Islamic college in Northern Africa, Ben Youseff Madrasa attracts travellers with the finest details of Moroccan architecture and its interiors. Today, this historic site operates as a museum and is one of the top buildings to explore while in Marrakech.
Ben Youssef Madrasa is now open to visitors after the renovation taking place between 2018-2020. The opening hours are 9am-5pm and the entrance fee is $5.
3. TRY TRADITIONAL MOROCCAN TAGINE
Traditional Moroccan tagine is a succulent, slowly simmered stew balancing sweet and savoury flavours and aromatic spices. Cooked in the unglazed clay or ceramic pot, tagine is a must-try dish when in Marrakech. Although tagine is usually served with meat, you can enjoy the vegetarian options in great and stylish restaurants such as Atay!
When dining out in town, seek rooftop restaurants for the best city views and incredible atmosphere.
4. STAY IN A TRADITIONAL RIAD
A trip to Marrakech is not complete without a stay in one of the traditional riads. Moroccan riads are boutique guesthouses composed of chamber-style rooms and courtyards lining up with tropical gardens. Instead of booking a room in a classic resort, choose a riad instead to experience the very best of Marrakech.
The majority of riads are like hideouts which have Medina at a doorstep. Hidden away from bustling streets, a riad will be your tranquil oasis right in the heart of a vibrant city.
5. ESCAPE TO AGAFAY FOR A DESERT ADVENTURE
Less than 1 hour trip from Marrakech, there’s Agafay Desert. Defined by vast, stony plains, peaceful Agafay contrasts perfectly with bustling Marrakech. If you’re up for an adventure, you can escape the city for a quad tour or book a stay in one of the incredibly stylish campsites such as Scarabeo or Agafay Luxury Camp.
Those Indiana Jones movie inspired camps are perfect getaways for those who don’t mind crisp desert air and a pinch of real adventure.
Scarabeo Camp is one incredible property to book a night in. With spacious and stylish tents, the most delicious food and scenic views, it is worth every single penny.
6. STROLL AROUND JEMAA EL-FNA
This UNESCO-listed square is truly iconic to Marrakech. Being situated in the very heart of Medina, Jemaa el-Fna attracts travellers with music, snake charmers and shopping stalls. Here you can grab a delicious freshly-squeezed juice, taste street food and buy a souvenir which will remind you of this special place.
After the sunset, the square transforms into a music fair, where you can dance to the beat of a drum and try delicious food in restaurants that pop up everywhere.
Although a little overwhelming with sounds, colours and flavours, the most famous square in Marrakech is not to be missed!
Travel tip: If you have an opportunity to take a picture with a snake, monkey or other animals, simply refuse! Never contribute to animal cruelty when traveling. Although you may feel like the animals are kept in good conditions, you can never be sure what is happening behind the scenes. By reducing the interest in animal entertainment, you add your bit to stopping those cruel practices!
7. INDULGE IN SOUK SHOPPING
Does a scene of Carrie Bradshaw leaving her passport behind while shopping for shoes ring a bell? Although pictured as Abu Dhabi, SATC was actually filmed in Marrakech and what is more, this very scene was captured on one of the traditional souks.
The souks are iconic to Marrakech and the city used to link many trading routes in the past. Back in the day, sellers would flock into Marrakech to sell day-to-day essentials and food. Today local people run their small shops and provide unique goods you cannot find anywhere else.
Whether you're shopping for clothes, accessories, spices or home decor such as berber rugs or lanterns- you cannot go wrong in Marrakech.
Travel tip: Always bargain when shopping on a market! This is a common practice here in Marrakech and you can save up to 50% of the original price.
8. VISIT JARDIN MAJORELLE
Another iconic location in Marrakech that you cannot miss is Jardin Majorelle. If you are interested in the history of fashion, you should definitely include this place into your itinerary considering that Jardin Majorelle was purchased by Yves Saint Laurent back in the 1980's. Originally designed by Jacques Majorelle, this unique blue-walled villa contrasts perfectly with the surrounding cacti gardens.
The villa is currently open to visitors and houses the Berber Museum as well as the newly-opened Yves Saint Laurent Museum.
Travel tip: The entrance fee to the YSL gardens is 70 Dirham ($7.50). To visit the Museum you need to pay an additional 30 Dirham ($3.30). make sure you arrive here early to beat the crowds and a long queue to the ticket office!
9. BOOK IN FOR A TRADITIONAL HAMMAM
Traditional Moroccan hammam is a treatment, during which you soak up in a pool or relax in a steam room, then you get rinsed, exfoliated and massaged. Hammam practices are widely available in Marrakech hotels and spas. Although there are many public hammams which are cheaper than the private ones, you can certainly book in for a private treatment.
Booking tip: One of the most incredible hammam spots in Marrakech is the iconic La Mamounia hotel. Their spa is world’s class!
10. DISCOVER THE VERY BEST OF MARRAKECH ARCHITECTURE
If you're an architecture and history lover, you are up for a treat here in Marrakech. Spend a day of your itinerary exploring the beauty of mosaic tiles, arcades and the finest designs. Visit Bahia Palace and wander its gardens and impressive courtyard. As it was originally built to be the greatest palace of all, every corner of this mansion is aesthetically pleasing and inspiring.
Another Marrakech landmark to be added to your list is the Koutoubia Mosque. Although only Muslim can enter its gates, you can wander around the walls and admire this iconic spot. You can easily spot the mosque’s tower from Marrakech centre as it gracefully overlooks the whole of Medina.
Saadian Tombs are next on your “must-see” list. This historic royal necropolis dates back to the Saadian dynasty and is regarded as one of the greatest wonders of Moroccan architecture.
11. BOOK AN DAY TRIP FROM MARRAKECH
Marrakech is a perfect base to take off on a day trip to its picturesque surroundings. Check out those epic locations if you need inspiration for planning your Moroccan adventure!
