Sarakiniko Beach, Milos- The complete guide

The Greek Island of Milos attracts hundreds of thousands travellers each year with its otherworldly natural wonders. Travellers flock into the island to explore its small fishing villages, taste the very best of Greek cuisine, but above all, to explore its incredible landscapes. 

Without a doubt, the most iconic spot on the island, which has gained a huge social media exposure over the past few years, is one and only Sarakiniko Beach. This very location makes people add Milos to their island hopping tours or mark the island as their ultimate travel destination. 

ABOUT SARAKINIKO

Located in the North of Milos, Sarakiniko is a coastal strip of white volcanic rock formations surrounded by the bluest of waters. The beach owes its unique colour palette to volcanic ash which cooled and hardened into the wavy lunar landscapes. 

This bone-white beach has been shaped by strong North winds and is often compared to a moonscape. The volcanic rocks of Sarakiniko are some of the most photographed Greek landscapes and that is for a very good reason! 

HOW TO GET TO SARAKINIKO

Sarakiniko, and namely Milos Island, can be easily accessed by air or sea as there are daily ships and flights operating from Athens. The flight takes approximately 25 minutes while the boat trip is between 5 and 6 hours. 

If you’re exploring other cycladic islands, you can take a ferry directly from Santorini, Mykonos, Paros or other places which are on your island hopping list. 

BEST TIME TO VISIT SARAKINIKO

The best time to visit Sarakiniko is the European summer and the peak months of June-September. If you, however, want to beat the crowds, plan your trip for May or early October as the weather and water temperature are still pleasant.  

When in Milos, you should visit Sarakiniko during different times of the day:

-Early morning to watch the Sun rising above the rocks

-Midday to swim in the most beautiful turquoise water

-Sunset time for the pink haze and dreamy sun flares reflecting in the lagoon

Each part of the day will give you an entirely new experience. Personally, I would spend every sunset in Sarakiniko! This is when the beach is relatively empty, the Sun is soft and the sky changes colours from orange to dreamy pink tones. Sunset is also the best time to take dreamy photos when visiting the beach. 

HOW TO GET AROUND

The best way to explore Milos and get to Sarakiniko is by ATV, car rental or scooter. There are not many taxis on the island, so if you’re planning to hire one, it may come at a very hefty price. 

Although there are guided tours and Sarakiniko is one of the main spots in the itineraries, it is best to rent a car and have the full freedom to explore this and other marvelous locations without the pressure of time. 

ARRIVING AT SARAKINIKO

The beach is very easy to find in Google Maps and you also have road signs directing you to the destination. Upon the arrival, you will be greeted with raw, yet beautiful landscapes and you will see Sarakiniko unveil once you walk down the path. 

There is a spacious free car park right at the entrance to the beach. To access Sarakiniko you will need to take a 5 minute walk as the cars and bikes are not permitted beyond a certain point. 

WHAT TO SEE

Sarakiniko is perfect for photographers, adrenaline junkies who jump from the tall cliffs, but also for those who want to relax being surrounded by some of the most exquisite views. 

There are two main locations within Sarakiniko- The cliffs and the strip.

Do not be mistaken when looking at the images of people jumping from Sarakiniko cliffs- it really takes a brave person to jump! The cliffs are much higher than they appear on the images, so if you are not sure of your diving skills- better choose to swim in the strip. 

There are plenty of locations to explore around Sarakiniko and you will find them all by simply wandering around. 

Except the cenote, blue lagoon and multiple viewpoints, there is also a snorkeling spot which you cannot miss if the waters are calm! The Sarakiniko shipwreck, which is a remnant of a tanker ship that sank during a storm back in 2003, is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island.
