Navagio Beach, Greece- The Complete Guide
2021-04-12
You won’t be the first, and certainly not the last traveller to madly fall in love with Zakynthos. The mesmerizing blue waters, mysterious caves, breathtaking sunsets, raw and sun-drenched landscapes are just the introduction to what you’re about to experience while visiting one of Greece's signature islands.
Out of all Zakynthos locations that make your heart beat faster, there’s namely one that really stands out. Navagio Beach, also known as the Shipwreck Beach, is a small stretch of white sands surrounded by an endless sea of incredibly turquoise waters and the limestone cliffs. But besides the extraordinary panorama, there is something else that adds even more beauty and mystery to Navagio.
ABOUT NAVAGIO BEACH
The “Smugglers Cove” which is another term for Navagio, is located on the North-West coast of Zakynthos and is only accessible by boat. The beach was initially called Agios Georgios, but gained its new name as the shipwreck was washed out to it’s jaw-dropping shore back in 1980’s and has been its unquestionable landmark since.
Although there are many theories about the shipwreck’s appearance, there is one that most people believe in.
On 2 October 1980, the ship named Panagiotis, capsized in the waters near Zakynthos Island due to the stormy weather and poor visibility. It was washed towards Navagio shores where it remains until today. Some rumours claim the ship was smuggling cigarettes, however it has never been confirmed and the captain wasn't convicted for such offences. After the ship crashed, it was abandoned and still rests buried in the limestone gravel of the beach that remains one of Greece's most famous locations.
HOW TO GET TO ZAKYNTHOS
As Zakynthos is one of the most popular summer destinations in Greece, there are numerous direct flight options from the major european airports. If you’re in luck, you can book them extremely cheap.

If you decide to travel in May, September and October, the water will still be warm enough to swim, but you’ll be able to explore the best spots without overwhelming crowds.
The best time of the day to visit Navagio is later in the afternoon. Sunset watched from the viewpoint it’s a whole new experience that you cannot miss. At this time of the day people tend to head back to hotels, leaving the entire beach for you to enjoy.
SAFETY TIPS FOR EXPLORING NAVAGIO
Although Navagio and namely its viewpoint are the top locations in the island of Zakynthos, the cliff tops are completely unprotected. You walk or sit at the edge at your own risk. There have been cases reported of people falling down the cliffs so remember to take extremely serious precaution measures when visiting this beautiful place. It’s also important to judge the weather before your visit and avoid walking on top of the cliffs during windy days.
When at the beach, try to find a spot away from the cliffs as there have been cases of landslides and rocks falling down.
