Let's be clear: you don't need a special excuse to take a late springtime trip to Cape May, New Jersey. The seaside resort town has been a vacation destination in the Northeast for centuries, with beaches, boardwalks, and historic charm in spades. When the weather is bright and warm and the surf's up, there's few places finer to chillax on the New Jersey coastline.

This spring, though, tourists had an extra incentive to check out the historic seaside city. In preparation for the filming of a new Bob Dylan biopic, parts of Cape May have been taken back through time to the 1960s- and on May 16, one lucky photographer got to see its magical transformation up close.

Took a little roadtrip down to Cape May last night to see the town converted into 1960’s Newport, RI. The rain held off filming but we got to see all of the sets and it was pretty magical. ✨ #capemay #acompleteunknown #bobdylan

Wedding photographer Madison Neumann, aka @mneumannphoto , visited historic Cape May, snagging shots of the town's temporary transformation into Newport, Rhode Island , as it was in the 1960s. The historical architecture in the town already lent itself to an easy transformation, but details like the vintage cars, period-appropriate advertising, and music posters really sealed the deal. It really feels like the town went through a time warp!

Cape May is one of several shooting locations for A Complete Unknown , a new Bob Dylan biopic starring Dune star Timothee Chalamet. Unfortunately, Madison didn't get to see the Hollywood heartthrob while touring the film set: "The rain held off filming, but we got to see all of the sets and it was pretty magical."

Shooting Locations for 'A Complete Unknown'

Bob Dylan's life has been chronicled on the silver screen before, most famously in 2007's I'm Not There , where an ensemble cast of actors (including Cate Blanchett) portrayed the master musician throughout different stages of his life. Comparitively, A Complete Unknown is much less broad in scope, focusing instead on a particular controversial early period in Dylan's decades-long career.

According to Deadline , the new movie, directed by James Mangold, "centers on the Newport Folk Festival in 1965 , as a young Dylan shakes up his act on the folk music scene by going electric and siring rock as the voice of a generation-defining one of the most transformative moments in 20th century music." Starring alongside Chalamet's Dylan is Elle Fanning, playing a love interest purportedly inspired by Suze Rotolo, one of Dylan's exes.

Film buffs and Chalamet fans have been tracking the biopic's production throughout several filming locations in New York and New Jersey. The Cape May shooting dates attracted a ton of attention to the town, with the Cherry Hill Courier-Post sharing videos from Cape May locals and visitors alike who swarmed the streets to catch glimpses of the stars and the town's mid-century transformation. The traffic on Mother's Day weekend was reportedly so intense that the city offered free shuttle services!

Unfortunately, it looks like shooting has already wrapped in Cape May- at least, for now. According to Philly Voice , production is scheduled to continue filming in parts of New Jersey well into June, with purported locations in Hudson, Passaic, Essex, and Cape May counties. If you're thinking about a Jersey Shore trip within the next month, keep your ear to the ground: you might just get to catch a glimpse of the production at their next shooting location!
