With the summer weather bearing down on the Northern Hemisphere, a lot of people are choosing to enjoy the heat in the idyllic surroundings of a tropical island paradise. However, not everyone has an affinity for the baking summer heat, preferring to look northward for their summer retreats- for example, in the form of a nice Alaskan cruise!

If you're feeling up to a summertime cruise in Alaska, you've got no shortage of cruise lines and ships to take you there. However, one reporter for The Points Guy made an impassioned case for the Celebrity Edge, Celebrity's Cruises' first Edge-class ship, after hopping aboard on its first journey to Alaska. Here's why the Celebrity Edge was a clear winner in her book:

Kristy Tolley from @thepointsguy was on the Celebrity Edge for its inaugural sailing to Alaska- though not its inaugural sailing overall. First launched in 2018, the Celebrity Edge previously had many sailings in the Caribbean and Mediterranean prior to this summer, when it added a brand-new 7-night Alaskan cruise itinerary to its roster.

The Celebrity Edge is exceptional in its fleet for being the very first Edge-class ship, Celebrity's newest, biggest, and most advanced series of ocean liners. According to The Points Guy , Celebrity's Edge-class vessels pioneered a number of cutting-edge cruise innovations , most notably the aforementioned "Infinite Veranda" cabins that Kristy Tolley enjoyed. These cabins come with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that can be lowered halfway to waist-height, transforming the room into a quasi-balcony. While Tolley would later write that the Infinite Veranda window concept originally came from river cruise ships , Celebrity was supposedly the first to introduce them to the ocean cruise industry (though other cruise lines would later adopt similar cabin concepts, such as the " Infinite Ocean View Balcony Room " on Royal Caribbean's new Icon of the Seas).

But technical innovations alone do not a perfect cruise vessel make: the Celebrity Edge does this by crafting a luxurious and serene atmosphere on board to emulate the " upscale resort " experience Tolley mentioned. Kristy was enthralled by the overall upscale on-board environment, likening the main dining venues to specialty restaurants and praising the impressive onboard entertainment. In her full write-up, she would also applaud the ship's lush decoration, including live plants and colorful artwork, that created an "upscale and understated woodland fantasy vibe"- definitely dreamier than your average cruise ship aesthetics. Even the ship's public restrooms earned praise from Tolley, who described them as "spa-like." You know they're doing something right when even the public restrooms earn high praise!

Experiencing Alaska on the Celebrity Edge

The Celebrity Edge will launch on six more Alaskan cruise sailings this summer, from June 28 to September 6. The " Alaska Dawes Glacier " itinerary launches from Seattle, Washington , docks at several ports of call including Ketchikan and Juneau, and sails through the fjords and past the glaciers of Alaska's Inside Passage before returning home.

The Celebrity Edge honestly seems like an ideal ship for an Alaskan cruise . It doesn't boast a lot of big water-based attractions like massive water slides and Flowriders that you might find on Royal Caribbean or Carnival ships in the Caribbean. Instead, it boasts more understated yet luxurious amenities perfect for cruising in colder climes, including the aforementioned theatrical entertainment, more than two dozen bars and restaurants, a casino, and multiple indoor deck venues like the lush, greenhouse-like Eden and the adults-only Solarium. Oh, and while the Edge might not have an amibitious onboard water park like some cruise ships, it does have two-story martini glass-shaped hot tubs on its Resort Deck . Honestly, what more do you need for an Alaskan cruise?
