ANGOLA, Ind. (WANE) – Trine softball is officially getting a chance to defend their Division III national championship. The Thunder edged Calvin, 4-3, to win their third straight MIAA tournament title and lock up an automatic bid to the NCAA DIII tournament.

Trine fell behind early after Calvin’s Carly Dole blasted a solo shot to left field in the first inning. The Thunder answered back in that frame with a 2-run blast by Karley Trine, followed by a base hit by Emma Lee that allowed Tyra Marcum to score.

Calvin tied the game at 3-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. However, Trine got the last laugh thanks to a solo shot by Marcum in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Alexis Michon closed the door with three straight strikeouts to clinch a conference tournament title. The pitcher struck out eight batters while allowing six hits in a complete game.

Trine now awaits their placement in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m.
