FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Two people were found dead inside a Chevy SUV on Tonkel Road in northern Allen County early Monday morning in what police are calling a death investigation.

The investigation began just before 4 a.m. A man and woman both had apparent gunshot wounds, according to Sgt. Adam Griffith with the Allen County Sherriff’s Department. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police found two long guns in the SUV, Griffith said.

The sheriff’s department had to shut down Tonkel between Hursh and Hosler. Tonkel Road reopened just before 8 a.m.

The SUV did bump a guard rail, but the crash isn’t believed to have killed the two people. No foul play is suspected, and investigators are confident this is an isolated incident between the two people.

This is a developing story and it will be updated when more information becomes available.

This story has been corrected to indicate police are calling this a death investigation and have not ruled out a murder-suicide.
