FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Community members can plunge into the world of water treatment at the City Utilities’ second annual WaterWorks FunFest on Saturday.

Frank Suarez, chief of communications at City Utilities, said this festival eases kids’ curiosity and breaks down what happens after they flush the toilet.

“I think it’s a good opportunity to learn,” Suarez said. “Not only learn what happens when you flush, but also what goes on with our watersheds … and how to protect the rivers.”

Tours around the Water Pollution Control Plant educate visitors on how the facility manages 100 million gallons of water daily. Participants take a journey through the plant, making stops at the screening, pump and control rooms, the control room, as well as the laboratory.

A limited supply of toy “water bears” will be available to take home.

In addition to the tour, the event includes hands-on experiments, games and prizes. Visitors may also interact with Science Central, watershed and environmental exhibitions. Food trucks plan to be at the plant.

WaterWorks FunFest runs on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Water Pollution Control Plant on 2601 Dwenger Avenue. Admission is free.
