FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – High school girls flag football is making waves across the country, including Fort Wayne.

For the first time this fall, Fort Wayne hosted a girls flag football league consisting of FWCS high schools. In the final weekend of the season, South Side snipped Snider in a thrilling win to win the inaugural city championship.

Following a thrilling championship for the Archers, we’re proud to present South Side girls flag football as your Optimum Performance Sports Team of the Week!

The Archers relied on several playmakers this fall, including sisters Bry’lee and Bri’Tanya Diedrich-Williams. Led by head coach Chris Lahr, South Side won three of their four regular season games before edging Northrop and Snider in the city tournament.

27 schools sponsored a girls flag football team this season, up from eight the previous year. With the sport continuing to gain momentum, there is hope that girls flag football can eventually become an emerging sport from the IHSAA, putting the game on a pathway to be fully sponsored.
