FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A man was taken into custody around 8 Friday night after a three hour standoff in the 2700 block of Poinsette Drive, which connects State Blvd. and Goshen Road.

FWPD were originally called to a domestic situation around 5 p.m. that police say “escalated.”

Police made contact with the man and he started to make threats.

He went back into the house and refused to come out.

After several unsuccessful attempts were made by telephone to have him exit, the Crisis Response Team (Negotiators) and the Emergency Services Team (Tactical Officers) were called to the scene.

Around 8 p.m., police began to instruct the man to exit with his hands above his head. Police were then seen placing a partially-dressed person in the back of a squad car.

An FWPD release said the unidentified man would be taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation.

In an effort to ensure the residence was safe, officers from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were requested. During the incident, the individual made reference to making a device. Technicians will search the residence to ensure no hazards exist.
