Fatal crash on IN Toll Road, east of Angola

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — Indiana State Police (ISP) said one person was dead after two tractor/trailers crashed on the Indiana Toll Road east of Angola Friday afternoon around 5:15.

A pickup truck was also involved in the crash, which shut down the westbound lanes of I 80/90 near the 146.6 mile marker for five hours.

According to an ISP release, a 2020 Freightliner semi was traveling west approaching traffic that had been slowed by a previous, unrelated car fire.

The Freightliner failed to slow down, then, to avoid stopped traffic, swerved into the back of a Mack semi truck, clipping a Ford F-150 pickup truck in the process.

The impact caused extreme damage to the cab of the Freightliner.  The driver and passenger of the Freightliner were trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by the Fremont Fire Department.

The driver of the Freightliner was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner.

The passenger of the Freightliner was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital with unknown injuries, not believed to be life threatening.

Neither the driver of the Ford F-150, nor the driver of the Mack semi-tractor/trailer were injured in the crash. However, they were transported to a local hospital for required chemical testing, which is required of all drivers involved in a serious bodily injury or fatal crash in the State of Indiana, ISP said.

Release of the Freightliner driver’s identification was pending notification of family members in Georgia.
