FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – The Fort Wayne Police Department is investigating a crash Friday afternoon that left a female dead east of downtown.

The crash happened shortly after a fire broke out south of downtown.

A battalion chief responding to that fire in an FWFD vehicle was involved in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of South Anthony Boulevard and Maumee Avenue at about 4 p.m., according to Fort Wayne Police.

Initial reports indicated someone involved in the crash was in life-threatening condition. Police later confirmed a female – whose age was not given – died in the crash.

It’s not clear how many other people were involved or how many others were injured.

FWPD sent out a public safety alert shortly before 5 p.m. warning drivers to avoid the area.
