The state Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced part of Route 23 northbound in Wantage would be closed as the agency embarks on a monthslong project on the highway. The shutdown was to begin at 9 a.m. at mile post 45.2, according to the department. The travel lane and shoulder were expected to be completely closed until 3 p.m.

After that, "alternating traffic will be maintained during construction, which is expected to be completed in fall 2024," the NJDOT said in a news release. "Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays while driving through the work zone."

The work is part of a $13.1 million slope reinforcement project to "clean and rehabilitate stormwater facilities in various locations across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren counties," the agency said.

Wednesday's closure was necessary for construction workers to set up a barrier, traffic signals and a work zone along Route 23, the department said.
