Construction Update Brattleboro-Hinsdale Bridge – August 29, 2024
BF A004(152) One-way alternating traffic controlled by flaggers can be expected on Vermont Route 142 as they build the intersection for the new bridge. At the Vermont abutment, crews have begun and will continue to work on the expansion joint. Work on moment slabs/sidewalks adjacent to VT 142 will begin and continue over the next few weeks.
To stay open, Windham Elementary fought for independence. It closed anyway
On a cold, gray Saturday in March, about a third of all the people living in Windham crammed into the town’s more than 220-year-old white clapboard meetinghouse. One item in particular had driven turnout on this Town Meeting Day: a ballot article that would permanently shutter Windham’s tiny elementary school. It was the third time in three years that the question would be posed to Windham’s 500 residents.
Prospect Street Closure Sept 3-6
The Utilities Division will be replacing a sewer line on Upper Forest Street beginning Tuesday, September 3 through Friday, September 6. Upper Forest Street will be closed in the area of house number 61 during this work. Work will begin at 6:30am and end by 5:00pm daily. Accommodations for access for residents of Thorn Lane will be made available though there may be some delays. Emergency Service access to 61-72 Upper Forest St and Thorn Lane will be via Upper Forest Street and 35-55 Upper Forest will have access via Chestnut Hill/Acorn Lane.
BFWC to begin 123rd club year
BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – The Bellows Falls Woman’s Club (BFWC) will begin its 123rd club year on Sept. 10, with a meeting to be held at the United Church, School Street, beginning at 1:30 p.m. The program presenter will be Michele Bos-Lun, Westminster resident and representative to the Vermont Legislature, speaking on women in prison.
Help Develop the Strategies That Will Shape Southern Vermont’s Economic Future: CEDS Public Input Sessions Announced
Southern VT: Community volunteers, municipal leaders, business owners, and others are invited to attend a series of sessions to review and discuss the proposed 2024-2029 Southern Vermont Zone Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) that will take place around the region on September 25 and 26. Attendees will be asked for their feedback on the proposed objectives and strategies that will help shape the next 5 years of our region’s economic strategy.
Historical Society remembers Mountain Mills 100 years later
WILMINGTON - This month marked the conclusion of a yearlong commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the flooding of Mountain Mills. The commemoration, led by the Historical Society of Wilmington, comprised numerous site visits around town related to the once-thriving community that ceased to exist in 1924 when the New England Power Company flooded it to create the Harriman Reservoir.
Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – September 3, 2024
The 2020 Community Safety Plan is on the agenda again after quite a long time. “Final Staff Recommendations for Implementation” will be presented and acted upon. The Town wants to adjust Town Ordinances regarding “Acceptable Community Conduct” and will hold a first reading of some proposed changes. Some new housing on Elliot Street, plans for the Safe Fair, and a Health Order for 6 Reynolds Drive, round out the agenda for the evening. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during Public Participation.
“Murder by the Book” auditions at Rockingham Library
BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. – The Rockingham Free Public Library, in partnership with Main Street Arts, is pleased to announce auditions for “Murder by the Book,” a play written by Laura Teasdale and sponsored by author Louise Penny, on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. on both days, at Main Street Arts in Saxtons River. The production will be directed by Sam Howard.
