    Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Wareham Gatemen, Y-D Red Sox sit atop divisions

    South Florida’s Bobby Boser hit a grand slam and the Wareham Gatemen held off the Bourne Braves 8-6 to win its second-straight game at Clem Spillane Field . The Gatemen led 8-3 before the Braves rallied with three runs across the seventh and eighth innings. Arizona’s Anthony Susac, however, struck out two Braves batters and gave up one hit in the ninth to secure the save.

    Boser, the reigning Cape Cod Baseball League Player of the Week , finished with six RBIs, three hits, two runs scored and a walk. Nate Early (Florida SouthWestern State JC) had two hits, including a home run, an RBI and a scored run. Brendan Summerhill (Arizona) and Yohann Dessureault (Stetson) both scored two runs each. Tate McGuire (Arkansas) pitched 3.2 innings, gave up three hits, two earned runs, a walk and struck out three, while Ethan Darden (Clemson) picked up the win following one scoreless inning to improve to a 2-1 record.

    Marist’s Ethan Conrad had four hits, three RBIs and scored a run to power the Bourne offense. He was one of only three players to record a hit, while the Braves racked up six walks. They struggled with runners in scoring position, going 3-for-10 in such situations and left eight on base. Nolan Sparks (Rochester) struggled in 3.1 innings, where he gave up six hits, two home runs, six earned runs, two walks and struck out six in the loss.

    Y-D Red Sox 4, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 2

    Arkansas’ Wehiwa Aloy hit a three-run home run to cap off a four-run third inning, which lifted the Red Sox (11-4) past the Harbor Hawks (8-6-1). Hyannis’ Alex Lodise (Florida State) and Wallace Clark (Duke) had solo home runs in the top of the ninth before Trevor Moore (Stanford) shut the door for his fifth save of the season. Ethan Petry (South Carolina) had a hit, an RBI and scored a run. Sean Youngerman (Westmont) pitched five scoreless and hitless innings, walked two and struck out four.

    Pierce Coppola (Florida) pitched 4.1 innings, gave up four hits, a home run, four earned runs, three walks and struck out seven in 3.1 innings in the loss. Casey Hintz (Arizona) and Drake Meeks (Southern Mississippi) stopped the damage and combined to give up two hits and no runs in 4.2 innings.

    Harwich Mariners 13, Brewster Whitecaps 2

    East Tennessee State’s Tommy Barth (two hits, home run, four RBIs, two runs, walk) hit a fourth inning grand slam and the Mariners (9-6) mercy ruled the Whitecaps (5-10). Harwich scored eight runs in that inning to break a two-all tie and sprint away from Brewster. East Carolina’s Bristol Carter (two hits, two runs, two walks) and Florida’s Cade Kurland (two hits, two runs, walk) tallied three RBIs each. Six players recorded at least two hits, while Ryan Weingartner (St. Joseph’s) was the only player to be held without a hit. But he drew three walks. Cole Wisenbaker (Kansas State) pitched 0.2 scoreless innings, gave up two hits, struck out two and picked up his first win of the season.

    The Whitecaps left 10 on base and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. California Baptist’s Nick Dumesnil (hit, run) and Mississippi’s Andrew Fischer (two hits) drove in the only runs. Grant Cunningham (Washington) dropped to an 0-3 record on the mound after giving up five earned runs on two hits and three walks.

    Falmouth Commodores 6, Cotuit Kettleers 4

    The Commodores (5-10) held off a late rally by the Kettlers (9-6) to notch their second-straight win. Falmouth led 5-0 before Cotuit broke the shutout with a four-run seventh inning. The Commodores made it a two-run game in the eighth, which proved to be enough. Oklahoma’s Jaxon Willits (three hits, run, walk) was one of five players to record an RBI. Karson Bowen (TCU) had three hits, including a home run and scored three runs. Matthew Dallas (Tennessee) allowed no hits or runs in six innings and struck out three to pick up the win. Parker Coil (Arkansas) made his second save after giving up just one hit while striking out two in 2.2 innings.

    Arizona State’s Kien Vu (home run) Clemson’s Nolan Nawrocki (hit) both had two RBIs for the Kettleers. James Ellwanger (Dallas Baptist) dropped to an 0-2 record after giving up three hits, three earned runs and three walks with four strike outs in 2.1 innings.

    Chatham Anglers 12, Orleans Firebirds 1

    The Anglers (7-8) jumped out to a four-run lead and then padded their advantage with a five-run seventh inning to ground the Firebirds (4-11). Luke Cantwell (Pittsburgh) had two hits, three RBIs and scored two runs. Kyle Lodise (Augusta) tallied three RBIs, a hit and two walks, while Ike Irish (Auburn) scored three runs, had two hits and two RBIs. LSU’s Griffin Herring pitched five innings, gave up a home run, one earned run, two walks and struck out four in the win.

    Roch Cholowsky (UCLA) and Daniel Bucciero (Fordham) recorded the only hits for the Firebirds. Three others reached base via walks. Matt Ager (UC Santa Barbara) gave up five hits, five earned runs, three walks and struck out six in 5.1 innings in the loss.

    Tuesday

    Chatham Anglers 2, Brewster Whitecaps 1

    The Anglers (6-8) left it late, but scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings to edge the Whitecaps (5-9). Southern California’s Austin Overn (two hits, RBI) had a triple that drove in a run, while Ashton Larson’s (LSU) double scored the winning run. Karson Ligon (Mississippi State) pitched 4.1 innings, gave up four hits, one earned run, three walks and struck out three. Brian Zeldin (Georgia) picked up the win and moved to a 2-0 record after pitching three scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and one walk. Titan Hayes (Austin Peay) earned his second save of the season following 1.2 innings of work.

    J.D. Rogers (Vanderbilt) had two hits and a walk for the Whitecaps. Florida State’s Drew Faurot scored Brewster’s only run on a wild pitch. Vanderbilt’s Luke Guth pitched five scoreless innings, gave up four hits and struck out five. Ashton Crowther (Miami) dropped to 0-2 on the season after giving up two hits and two runs in 2.1 innings of relief.

    Orleans Firebirds 4, Cotuit Kettleers 3

    Khadim Diaw (Loyola Marymount) recorded a trio of a hits and an RBI to lift the Firebirds (4-10) to a win over the Kettleers (9-5). The Firebirds overturned a 3-2 deficit with runs in the seventh and eighth inning. Landon Moran (Stetson) laid down a sacrifice bunt, which drove in Hawaii’s Ben Ziegler-Namos (hit, two runs) for the winning run. Georgetown’s Cody Bowker went five innings, gave up four hits, two runs and struck out four as the starter. Lucas Litteral (Western Kentucky) picked up his first win after 1.1 innings of scoreless work, while Sean Mattson (Harvard) earned his fourth save.

    Cotuit left five batters on base and went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position with scoring at a premium. Missouri’s Logan Lunceford gave up two hits, two runs, two walks and struck out four across four innings in his last start for the Kettleers. Cam Schuelke (Mississippi State) pitched 1.1 innings, gave up three hits and one earned run in the loss.

    Bourne Braves 3, Y-D Red Sox 2

    The Braves (5-8-1) edged the Red Sox (10-4) behind Ethan Conrad’s (Marist) two-hit, two-run and RBI performance. Conrad tied the game with a solo home run in the sixth inning before a wild pitch gave the Braves a 2-1 lead. A Garrett Michel (Virginia Tech) single made it a two-run game. Arkansas’ Wehiwa Aloy (two hits, RBI, run) got the Red Sox within one following a home run to start the ninth inning, but Yarmouth-Dennis then went down 2-3-5. Beau Bryans (Jones County CC) picked up the win on the mound after pitching five innings, giving up two hits and one earned run to go with four strike outs. J.D. Thompson (Vanderbilt) secured the save with one inning of work, where he struck out two.

    Aloy, Brady Neal (Louisiana State) and Ethan Petry (South Carolina) all had two hits each, while only four Red Sox batters had a hit. Yarmouth-Dennis left seven on base and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Southeastern’s Ramsey Davis pitched four scoreless innings, gave up three hits, three walks and struck out five. Bryan Peck (Westmont) surrendered three hits, two earned runs and a walk in 1.2 innings in the loss.

    Falmouth Commodores 8, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 3

    Falmouth (4-10) exploded for six runs in the seventh inning, Purdue’s Luke Gaffney (hit, double, run) and Arkansas’ Jayson Jones (hit, run) both had a pair of RBIs, and the Commodores upended the Harbor Hawks (8-5-1). Six Falmouth batters had a hit, including three with two. Lipscomb’s Hayden Frank pitched four innings, gave up seven hits, three earned runs and had three strike outs, while Francis Ferguson (Eastern Nazarene) moved to a 2-0 record following two scoreless innings.

    Florida State’s Alex Lodise had a trio of hits and scored a run for the Harbor Hawks. Eighth batters recorded a hit for Hyannis, which had 12 total, but they were just 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Luke Nichols (Louisiana Tech) dropped to an 0-2 record on the mound with the loss.

    Wareham 4, Harwich 0

    Florida State’s Max Williams hit a solo home and a three-run seventh inning was all the Gatemen (10-4) needed to beat Harwich (8-6) in a pitchers’ duel. Darin Horn (Coastal Carolina) pitched four scoreless innings, gave up three hits, one walk and struck out five, while Heath Andrews (NC State) earned the win with an inning of scoreless action. Arkansas’ Jake Faherty secured his third save of the season with two innings of work.

    The Mariners only had three players record a hit. Ryan DeSanto (St. Joseph’s) had a strong outing, despite the loss, giving up just three hits, one earned run, three walks to go with three strike outs. Olin Johnson (North Carolina) surrendered three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings.
