    Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Cotuit Kettleers move by Wareham Gatemen for first place

    The Cotuit Kettleers (19-9-1) eased to a fourth-straight win after it pulled away late for a 10-5 victory over the Chatham Anglers (15-14). The Kettlers consolidated their lead atop the West Division in the process.

    Indiana’s Devin Taylor (two hits, one home run, three RBIs, one walk, one run) and Arizona State’s Brandon Compton (one hit, three RBIs, two runs, one walk) both hit three-run home runs, while Louisiana-Monroe’s Easton Winfield (three runs, one hit, one RBI, one walk) had a solo blast. Tanner Thach (UNC Wilmington) had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice. Joey Volchko (Stanford) pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up four hits, one run (earned), walked three and struck out six. Brycen Parrish (North Alabama) pitched 2 1/3 innings in relief, gave up two hits, two runs (both earned), walked one and struck out four, and improved to a 2-0 record.

    Aiva Arquette (Washington) had three hits and scored a run for the Anglers, who dropped to a third-straight loss. Dallas Baptist’s Chayton Krauss recorded two hits and two RIBs. Ike Irish (Auburn) contributed two hits and a run. Will Bermudez (UC Irvine) hit a two-run homer. Jenkins gave up seven hits, five runs (all earned), walked one and struck out one in four innings and fell to an 0-1 record.

    Wareham Gatemen 10, Bourne Braves 5

    Yohann Dessureault (Stetson) went 4-for-5 and scored four runs and the Gatemen (18-10-1) beat the Braves to keep pace with Cotuit for the West Division crown. Fresno State’s Triston Gray had a trio of hits and RBIs, scored a run and drew a walk. Reese Chapman (Tennessee) had two hits, which included a solo home run, and scored once. Antonio Jimenez (Central Florida) was walked twice and scored three times. Lehigh’s Cole Leaman pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed two hits and two runs, walked four and struck out one, while Jacob Faulkner (Princeton) moved to a 3-0 record after he pitched 1 1/2 innings, gave up three hits, one run (earned) and struck out one.

    Marist’s Ethan Conrad had three hits and scored a run for the Braves. Davis Gillespie (Southern Mississippi) had a pair of hits, one RBI, drew a walk and scored a run. Wake Forest’s Joe Ariola pitched four innings, gave up five hits, four runs (all earned), four walks and struck out six, and dropped to a 2-1 record.

    Hyannis Harbor Hawks 6, Harwich Mariners 0

    The Harbor Hawks (17-11-1) shutout and handed the Mariners (10-19) their fourth-straight loss. Tennessee’s Dalton Bargo had two hits, an RBI and scored two runs, while Eric Snow (South Florida) had two hits, which included a home run, two RBIs and scored a run. Ohio State’s Blaine Wynk pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, gave up three hits, walked one and struck out four. Maison Martinez (Virginia Commonwealth) secured his first win after he pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless and hitless baseball.

    Matt Scannell (Princeton) had three hits for the Mariners. Justin Mitrovich (Elon) pitched 4 2/3 innings, gave up six hits, three runs (all earned), walked two and struck out five in the loss.

    Y-D Red Sox 7, Falmouth Commodores 7

    The Red Sox (17-9-2) scored a pair of runs in the seventh to salvage a tie with the Commodores (10-18-1). RJ Austin (two hits, two runs, two RBIs) hit a two-run homer, while Will Tippett (one hit) and Ethan Petry (two hits, two RBIs, one run). Easton Carmichael had two hits, scored two runs and recorded an RBI. Braden Osbolt and Anderson combined to pitch six innings, gave up 11 hits, seven runs (all earned), walked one and struck out six.

    Louisville’s Gavin Kilen (three RBIs, two runs, one hit) hit a three-run home run and Oreg9h State’s Gavin Turley (one hit) had a solo homer. Matthew Dallas (Tennessee) pitched 3 1/3 innings, gave up seven hits, four runs (all earned), walked one and struck out seven.

    Orleans Firebirds 12, Brewster Whitecaps 2

    The Firebirds (10-9) scored five runs in both the second and third innings to beat the Whitecaps (12-16-1) in seven innings and win their third straight game. Gonzaga’s Hudson Shupe recorded three hits and scored two runs, Hawaii’s Ben Zeigler-Namoa had three hits, which included a three-run homer, three RBIs and scored a run. Jack Gurevitch (San Diego) had three hits, two RBIs and a run. Chris Barr (United States Military Academy) scored three times, had a hit and tallied an RBI. Callan Fang (Harvard) pitched five innings, gave up four hits, two runs (both earned), walked one and struck out four.

    Arkansas’ Ryder Helfrick hit a solo homer run and California Baptist’s Nick Dumesnil drove in a run on a sacrifice fly for the Whitecaps. Boston Flannery (North Carolina) lost after he gave up five hits, five runs and two earned runs in two innings.

    Friday

    Cotuit Kettleers 6, Wareham Gatemen 1

    The Kettleers (18-9-1) beat the Gatemen (17-10-1) and overhauled them for first place in the West Division standings in the process with a third straight win. Cotuit led 4-1 before adding a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Texas State’s Taylor Seay shutdown the best hitting offence in the league, pitched five one-hit and one-run innings, allowed no walks and struck out two in the win. Michael Ebner (Southern California) pitched four innings, gave up no hits or runs, walked one and struck out two to make the save. California’s Jarren Advincula (three hits, one double, three RBIs, one run) drove in a pair of runs in the second inning, while a single scored another in the eighth to push the game well out of reach.

    Triston Gray (Fresno State) had three hits, which included a solo home run and a double for the Gatemen. Wareham was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left five on base. Heath Andrews (North Carolina State) pitched 3 2/3 innings, gave up seven hits, four runs (three earned), walked three and struck out two, and dropped to a 2-1 record.

    Hyannis Harbor Hawks 6, Anglers 0

    The Harbor Hawks (16-11-1) allowed just three hits and eased past the Anglers (15-13), who have lost two straight games since they climbed to second in the East Division standings. Texas Christian’s Anthony Silva (two hits, three RBIs, two runs, one walk) hit a two-run homer in the second inning, while the Harbor Hawks pulled away with a four-run fourth. Aaron Savary (Iowa) pitched five scoreless and one-hit innings, walked four and struck out four to move to a 2-1 record.

    The Anglers, who had three different players record a hit, went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left five on base. Quinn Holt (Keystone College) pitched four innings, allowed six hits, four runs (two earned) and walked two in the loss.

    Orleans Firebirds 8, Y-D Red Sox 1

    The last-placed Firebirds (9-19) shocked East Division leading Red Sox (17-9-1) for their second-straight victory. Stetson’s Lorenzo Meola (one hit, two runs, one walk) and Loyola Marymount’s Robbie Ayers (one hit) both hit solo home runs. Ben Zeigler-Namoa (Hawaii) had two hits, an RBI and drew two walks. Chris Barr (United States Military Academy) contributed two RBIs, two hits and scored two runs. The Firebirds drew 10 walks. Hawaii’s Itsuki Takemoto pitched six scoreless innings, allowed three hits and struck out six, and improved to 2-1 with the win. Lucas Litteral (Western Kentucky) pitched three innings, gave up four hits, one run (earned) and struck out four.

    Seven different Red Sox players had a hit, while Ryan Sprock (Elon) drove in the only run of the game on a ground out. Dylan Vigue (Michigan) dropped to a 2-2 record with the loss. He pitched three innings, gave up two hits, which included a home run, one run (earned), walked one and struck out four.

    Bourne Braves 5, Brewster Whitecaps 0

    The Braves (12-14-2) blanked the Whitecaps (12-15-1) for their second-straight win. Ethan McElvain (Vanderbilt) pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings, gave up two hits, walked three and struck out six, while Will McCausland (Ole Miss) struck out six and allowed two hits in 3 1/3 innings in relief to pick up the win. Marek Houston (Wake Forest) had a trio of hits, scored a run and stole a base, and John Schroeder (Florida Atlantic) tallied two RBIs and a hit.

    Clemson’s Noah Samol pitched 2 2/3 innings, gave up two hits, two runs (both earned), walked five and struck out six in the loss. Nick Dumesnil (California Baptist) had two hits for the Whitecaps, who had four in the game.

    Falmouth Commodores 4, Harwich Mariners 3

    The Commodores (10-18) overturned a three-run deficit in a comeback win over the Mariners (10-18), who dropped their third straight game. Falmouth scored a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-3 lead that reliever Peter Phillips (Fairfield) and Gavin Wilhelm (Washburn) protected. The latter picked up the save. Francis Ferguson (Eastern Nazarene) pitched three innings, gave up four hits, two runs (both earned), walked two and struck out two, and improved to a 3-0 record. The Commodores had only four hits in the game, while the game-tying and game-winning runs came off sacrifice flies. Trent Caraway (Oregon State) and Jayson Jones (Arkansas) both had an RBI. Falmouth was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

    The Mariners had seven hits off seven different bats and only had one RBI. UNC Greensboro’s Jake Ogden hit a double to right field that drove in a run, while Daniel Dickinson (Utah Valley) scored on a fielding error on the same play. Their other run came in the first inning on a wild pitch. Ryan DeSanto (St. Joseph’s) pitched four scoreless innings, gave up two hits and struck out four. Danny Macchiarola (Holy Cross), who dropped to an 0-2 record, gave up four hits, two earned runs, one hit and walked one in 1 2/3 innings.
