    Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Y-D Red Sox beat Wareham Gatemen in clash of top teams

    The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox edged the Wareham Gatemen 3-2 in a shortened game at Red Wilson Field on Thursday night. The Red Sox (20-9-4) took a 2-0 first inning lead before the Gatemen (20-12-1) tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth. Easton Carmichael (Oklahoma) then scored the go-ahead and winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning.

    South Carolina’s Ethan Petry (two hits, one run) hit a two-run homer for Yarmouth-Dennis, which had five other players record a hit. Micah Buckman (Louisiana State) pitched four innings, gave up six hits, two runs (both earned), walked one and struck out five. Caleb Anderson (Wichita State) picked up his first win after he pitched three two-hit and scoreless innings and struck out five.

    Sam White (West Virginia) had two hits and scored a run for the Gatemen. Wareham left eight on base and went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Heath Andrews (North Carolina State) allowed five hits, three runs (all earned) and struck out four in three innings and dropped to a 2-2 record.

    In other Cape League action:

    Hyannis Harbor Hawks 7, Orleans Firebirds 5

    The Harbor Hawks (18-13-1) scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings to stop a two-game slide with their victory over the Firebirds (11-21). Leadoff man Jaxson West (Florida State) went 5-for-5 with two RBIs and a run for Hyannis, which had four other players record an RBI. Reed Moring (UC Santa Barbara) steadied the ship on the way to securing his second win after he pitched 3 1/2 scoreless and hitless innings. Ciaran Caughey (Kent State) and Braxton Pearson (Angelo State) combined to give up 11 hits, five runs (all earned), a walk and three strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

    Hudson Shupe (Gonzaga) had three hits, two RBIs, drew a walk and scored twice, and Ian Daugherty (Oklahoma State) notched three RBIs, two hits, and scored a run for Orleans. Every Firebirds batter recorded at least one hit. Michael Foltz Jr. dropped to an 0-2 record after he pitched four innings, gave up three hits, one run (earned), four walks and struck out two.

    Harwich Mariners 2, Brewster Whitecaps 1

    The Mariners (11-22) ended their seven game losing streak after they beat the Whitecaps (12-19-2) in a pitcher's duel. James Madison’s Donovan Burke pitched seven innings, gave up four hits, one run (earned), walked one and struck out four to pick up his first win. Sam Tookoian (Mississippi) pitched two perfect innings and struck out five to make the save. Michael Anderson (Rhode Island) had two hits and two RBIs in the bottom of the second to score Harwich’s only runs. Wilson Weber (Oregon State) had two hits and scored a run.

    Nick Dumesnil (California Baptist) had two hits and drove in the Whitecaps’ lone run in the fifth inning. Evan O’Toole (Oklahoma State) gave up three hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and struck out three in four innings, but dropped to an 0-1 record. The Whitecaps have dropped back-to-back games.

    Bourne Braves 9, Chatham Anglers 4

    Auburn’s Chris Stanfield (one hit) had three RBIs to carry the Braves (15-16-2) to a win over the Anglers (16-16). Oregon’s Chase Meggers (one hit, one run) and Virginia Tech’s Garrett Michel (one hit) both recorded two RBIs apiece. Clay Grady (Virginia Tech) had two hits, drew a walk and scored two runs. Tyler Fay (Alabama) went five innings, gave up four hits, three runs, one earned run, a walk and struck out seven to improve to a 3-1 record on the mound.

    Aiva Arquette (Washington) had one hit (one double), drew a walk and drove in two runs. Ike Irish (Auburn) had two hits and scored a run. Lucas Hartman (Florida Gulf Coast) pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowed four hits, three runs (all earned), walked two and struck out one, while JD McReynolds (Central Missouri) was credited with the loss after he pitched just 2/3 innings, gave up two hits and five earned runs.
